THE JOY OF NFS (song No. 5)
———————————
Somewhere in the late 2011, AK ji of Songsofyore, had written on this Blog about the importance of NFS. After reading his views, I too wrote a rather lengthy comment supporting the inclusion of NFS on this Blog. Our contention was that, prior to the Hindi Film Music becoming popular all over India, it was those gazals, Geets and Bhajans, privately sung and recorded by various artists which had ruled the tastes of music lovers. In fact many famous singers had recorded NFS in the beginning phase of their singing careers. Some names are Talat Mehmood, Saigal, Pankaj Mullik, Jagmohan and JUTHIKA ROY !

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp- 1)
——————————————
I grew up in a joint family of about 20 people including children. My childhood memories are vivid and I remember playing with cousins and enjoying Festivals with the elders. By coincidence ,by 1947-48 our joint family was fragmented, not because of the Partition, but because One Uncle joined Army, the other joined Navy and the third one joined Police. My own father had to go underground to evade arrest, after Gandhi ji’s assassination..He was an RSS worker. We shifted coolly to Banaras and stayed there for an year. Ultimately father was traced and arrested and we were escorted by the police to mother’s town in Maharashtra.

THE VIBRANT 40s (Episode No. 11)
—————————————–
None of my series is complete without a song by/from C Ramchandra. This not only indicates my love for his songs, but also highlights that he composed a variety of songs to fit into any series.

THE VIBRANT 40s (Episode No. 3)
———————————–
The Hindi film industry has been very dynamic throughout its history. From the beginning till today, plenty of new ideas, experiments and changes have improved the industry in many of its departments. Of course, it is not always that improvement in Technique improves the quality. As per the latest Technology, nowadays,to record a Duet song with chorus, it is not necessary for both the singers to be available at the same time and sing the song together. With 24 track tapes, nowadays, each singer comes as per his appointment to the recording studio, sings and records his part of the song and goes away. Same with the chorus party also. Once everyone has sung his part of the song, then the entire song is mixed and rerecorded together with the track of music and chorus included in it. Lo and Behold….Your New song is ready !

Badalte Huye Saathi (Episode 11…LAST SONG)(Lata sings with Chitalkar)
Finally, we have reached the end of this series having just 11 songs. For a theme like BADALTE HUYE SAATHI,11 songs is too less, I know. This subject is so vast that,at best,it can only be represented here, and it is not possible to do full justice to the topic, I agree. When I started this series,I had said that it is not possible to cover all the Major singers or cover the entire period of 1931 to 1960. However, the temptation to write on this topic was so intense that I decided to do it in 10 to 12 episodes, somehow. Utter ” Na- Insaafi “, I am aware of it !

25th March is the birthday of Farooque Sheikh. We would have been celebrating his 66th birthday if had not left us so suddenly. But as they say even God loves good souls.

hamri atariya pe aajaa re saanwariya dekha dekhi tanik hoi jaaye
This is the mukhda of the song from the film ‘Dedh Ishqiyaa’ (2014) which I partly heard for the first time during the promotion of the film on various TV channels in December 2013. I was very happy that in the era of Hindi film music where loud songs with high velocity instrumentation and the meaningless lyrics are the order of the day, this semi-classical song had also found a place in the scheme of things of the modern day movie makers.

This article is the 9500th song post in the blog.
OK, so it is 9500 today. Goodness, the Doppler effect that I discussed, oh just three short weeks ago, seems to be working just as told. The actual pace of posting songs is fairly normal and consistent. And yet, it seems we are speeding up, and will be reaching the magic number, faster than we thought we would get there.

Today, February 8th 2014 is the 73rd birth anniversary of Jagjit Singh ( 08/02/1941 – 10/10/2011) who is regarded as a catalyst in reviving ghazals as a form of singing not only in India but across the world. He transformed ghazal singing into an easier and acceptable form to suit the taste of masses. And what a coincidence! When Malika e ghazal, Begum Akhtar passed away in October 1974, Jagjit Singh was on the way up of becoming a popular ghazal singer when his first LP disc ‘The Unforgettable’ (1976) became commercially successful. So there was a sort of change of guard and handing over the baton of sorts in that Jagjit Singh took over the mantle of ghazal singing after the demise of Begum Akhtar.
