Today, February 8th 2014 is the 73rd birth anniversary of Jagjit Singh ( 08/02/1941 – 10/10/2011) who is regarded as a catalyst in reviving ghazals as a form of singing not only in India but across the world. He transformed ghazal singing into an easier and acceptable form to suit the taste of masses. And what a coincidence! When Malika e ghazal, Begum Akhtar passed away in October 1974, Jagjit Singh was on the way up of becoming a popular ghazal singer when his first LP disc ‘The Unforgettable’ (1976) became commercially successful. So there was a sort of change of guard and handing over the baton of sorts in that Jagjit Singh took over the mantle of ghazal singing after the demise of Begum Akhtar.

After quite a long time, I am concluding the series ‘Songs from the album Varsha Ritu’ with a piloo thmri by Padmabhushan Begum Akhtar. I am not going to post Mahendra Kapur’s song from that alum due to my personal prejudice. (At my age of 82 years, I have full rights to have some prejudices. !!!)

There have been various songs on Shaadi and the various rituals connected to it. For example a very good bidaai song is “Chal ri sajni ab kya soche” from “Bambai Ka Babu”. Then there are songs of mehndi; in recent times a lot of Yash Chopra movies had them (do we need to enumerate them here). There are also songs where the sister is teased by a younger sibling (Sun Sun Sun Didi from Khoobsurat) or a jiji Jija song as in “Hum Aapke hain Kaun.” Then there is the iconic song in Chaudvin Ka chand “Mera Yaar bana hai dulha” by Mohd Rafi which has stood the test of time.

BAHU BETI (1952) seems to be an obscure film which was produced under the banner of Kesar Films and directed by C L Dheer. The main cast included Geeta Bali and Amarnath in the lead roles with Vijaylaxmi, Jaswant, Leela Mishra, Rashid Khan etc in the supporting roles. There are 8 songs in the film written by Kaifi Azmi (7) and Vishwamitra Adil (1) which were set to music by S D Batish. Incidentally, the film’s director C L Dheer was the father of TV and film actor Pankaj Dheer (‘Karna’ of Mahabharat) and the grandfather of film actor Nikitin Dheer who has acted in films like ‘Jodha Akbar’ (2008) and ‘Chennai Express’ (2013).

shahar ki raat aur main naashaad o naakaara phiroon
jagmagaati jaagti sadakon pe aawaara phiroon
ae gham e dil kya karoon
ae vahshat e dil kya karoon

This is the mukhda of a very popular song from the film ‘Thokar’ (1953). Most of the lovers of old Hindi film songs would know that the song was rendered by Talat Mehmood and there is a version song sung by Asha Bhonsle. Many among them may also be aware that the song was composed by music director Sardar Malik. But I am not sure as to how many would to know the name of the poet who created this beautiful nazm of despair and loneliness. I was one among them. Many years later, I came to know that it was the creation of Majaz. Then the next question – who was Majaz?. I had no inclination then in seeking an answer to this question.
