#the Decade of 2020s– 2021- TO – 2030 #
———————————————————–————

Today we celebrate the 77th Republic Day of our country India. Our Independence is already above seventy-eight years now. We gained our hard fought freedom on 15th August 1947. So we gained independence more than 78 years ago, whereas India became a republic on this date in 1950.

We are all aware of the supreme sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and common people. The country was blessed to have some visionary leaders who led this freedom struggle. Once independence was achieved, they ensured that this hard fought freedom was not squandered but used for the benefit of the country and its population. Drafting a constritution for this newly idependent vast nation and making it a republic, where every citizen was guaranteed equality, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and gender, was something unprecedented in the entire history of India. India became a republic on 26 January 1950 and from that day onwards, India has been governed according to the Indian constitution that came into force on that date.

After that qawwali like fusion wedding song from “Bombay”, I remembered a few filmy qawwalis from the 21st century. Several of them are composed by ARR, so there is a possibility of at least one more qawwali in that series. There is another one from the 90’s which should follow in the next few days.

After the top one “Na to karwaan ki talaash hai” many people consider “parda hai parda hai” to be second most liked and famous qawwali in Rafi Sahab’s songs. I am sceptical about this rating. I have personally always liked “pal do pal ka saathh hamaara” and “Hai agar dushman” better than the hugely popular “Parda hai parda hai”. This qawwali is performed in most of the shows of Rafi Sahab songs. That is fine, as someone remarked, that it is a more engaging one and singers enjoy performing it. That makes it a favourite for the singers too. So, it has somethings going for it. I just wish that the singers try other equally appealing and engaging qawwalis too. All of them are trying to touch the benchmark, in playback singing left by Rafi Sahab. Some say that the textbook is written, and ink dried, and they just need to open the pages and try and absorb.

For qawwali, the non-filmy variety, there are other legends who have set benchmarks. “Na to karwaan ki talaash hai” certainly inspired and achieved a benchmark, so much so that for decades, none of the major music directors tried to reach that. A true sufiana genuine qawwali tradition in hindi films is revived by ARR. In the 90’s Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan did make a splash with his brand of originality in hindi films. Some others went the plagiarism way to cash in to the popularity of sufiana qawwalis of NFAK. It is ARR ingenuity that he comfortably travels from the southern Indian sounds and transcends the hieghts of sufiana, via the folklore and ‘Vande mataram” to Beethoven.

This post is not about A. R. Rehman, so I will move to the song.

This is unabashed attempt towards a genuine qawwali. With the colours and performance, choregraphed and shot with all angles, in the fashion of a live show performance on stage. Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar have teamed up for once, to deliver this funny romantic qawwali, in “Main hoon na” 2004.

Awards list is here:

Album Awards:
· 2004 – Filmfare Awards – Best Music Director – Anu Malik

Song Awards:
· 2004 – Screen Awards – Best Male Playback Singer – Tumse Milke Dil Ka Hai Jo Haal Kya Kahen – Sonu Nigam

And they delivered an enlivening creation; they all should be proud of. They gave it to Sonu Nigam and chorus team of Aftab Sabri and Hashim Sabri.

Shah Rukh Khan, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao and Sushmita Sen are on screen, dancing and prancing with a whole lot of other actors, and some dancers/extras. Females have no lines to sing, and Sonu Nigam is singing for both Shah Rukh and Zayed. So, this a real “one singer singing for two actors” song.

Colourful singing, colourful sets, colourful dancing, and all things full of colours and shades. Better to see it with dimmed setting in the computer. It is a multiple hat wearing picturization.

It is Sonu Nigam’s song, as he takes away all the singing accolades, and does a Rafi number with voice variation in mukhda repetition, to go to a true blue qawwali mode. Also changes his voice to suit SRK for the last stanza. SRK is seen enjoying himself throughout performing this qawwali, singing in chorus.

BTW, did anyone spot a “Golden Kite” in the song? It is ‘Makar Sankrant” time, after all. “Chali chali re patang meri chali re” is trending on the blog today.

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 7

The revival of the series on A. R. Rehman is beginning with this post. The last post in the series was this song.

I apologise for my tardiness in leaving the series like this for 2.5 years. None but myself to be blamed for not taking the targets/tasks seriously. Maybe that is the reason none of my series appear in the list of series posted in the blog.

Koyi nai, I plough on doggedly. Not that it is a hard task to find ARR gems, sometimes forgotten in decades old fog. Take the songs of “Saathiya” for instance.

Hullo Atuldom

To start with I would have sent a song to remember the legend Mohd Rafi on his 100th Birth anniversary. But after reading all the posts of the day on the blog, I am sure that I cannot do better than what is already said. I have been listening to songs of the legend since morning today.

The first song that I had sent to Atulji for posting today was from a film that had Sharmila Tagore’s character playing mother to Saif Ali Khan’s character in a 1993 film .

The song in this post is also similar. It has Dharmendra playing father to Sunny & Bobby Deol- his real life sons. Before this 2007 film the father-son duo of Dharmendra-Sunny had worked together in “Sultanat”, “Sunny” (no screentime together), “Saverewali Gaadi” and “Kshatriya”. Bobby & Sunny Deol had worked together in “Dillagi” in 1999.

‘Paapa Kahte Hain’ (1996) was produced by Plus Films (of Mahesh Bhatt and Amit Khanna) and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The cast included Jugal Hansraj, Mayuri Kango, Anupam Kher, Tiku Talsania, Navni Parihar, Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Suhas Joshi, Soni Razdan, Javed Khan, Dinesh Hingoo, Abhimanyu Singh, Sujata Kango, Johny Bakshi etc. The film was planned as a tele-film. However, when the main cast was finalised, it was decided to make it a feature film with Jugal Hansraj and Mayuri Kango in the lead roles. While Jugal Hansraj had already worked in a lead role in ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ (1994), for Mayuri Kango, it was her first film in the lead role and her mother, Sujata Kango also acted in this film.

Hullo Atuldom

Beginning this post with a few thoughts that have been running through my head. What is the time or age to define something as old?

I have been observing people around me, for the last few years of my better half’s tenure, at his last workplace. I am saying “last workplace” as he has decided to call it a day; inspite of loving what he has achieved over the last 45 years. People consider him young enough to open up about their joys & sorrows. His colleagues cannot believe or don’t want him to hang his boots yet. Of course, I am very proud of all that his co-workers (he doesn’t call them subordinates) have to say about him.

There are some prominent Hindi film actors whose names are mainly associated with ‘middle of the road’ and ‘off-beat’ cinemas though they have also worked in mainstream Hindi films. The names that comes to my mind are Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Dipti Naval etc. Almost all of them made their Hindi film debut under the direction of Shyam Benegal. I was not aware that Rajeshwari Sachdev was also one of such actors until recently while checking her filmography. She has worked on stage, television and films. She is also a singer and a dancer.
