“Jugnu” (1947) was a major Hindi movie in many ways. It was Noorjehaan’s last Hindi movie. It was this movie which gave us Dilip Kumar, who till then was a struggler. Noorjahaan acting opposite Dilip Kumar gave Dilip Kumar’s career a big fillip and he never looked back since.

Today (21 september) is the birth anniversary of Allah Wasai, popularly known as Noorjehaan (21 september 1926- 23 december 2000). She bagan her career in early 1940s as a child artist and soon graduated into adult roles as an actor-singer. She was at her peak when partition happened and she went to Pakistan, leaving the field of the leading female playback singing of Hindi movies up for grabs.

When one talks of a movie called “Naya Daur”, one thinks of the B R Chopra movie of 1957 which had Dilip Kumar and Vyjyanti Mala in lead roles and which had lilting music by O P Nayyar.

I was not aware of the fact that “Fakeera” (1976) was made by the same team that made “Chor Machaaye Chor” (1974). I always regarded “Chor Machaaye Shor” (1974) as an A grade movie and “Fakeera” (1976) as a B grade one. The fact that Mumtaz was the leading lady in “CMS” and a Shababa Azmi, then known only for her arts movie roles had much to do with my opinions about the two movies.

“Matlabi Duniya”(1961) must be one of the more obscure movies of all time. Little information is available about this movie. It was a Chetna Production movie. It was directed by Radhakant M Thakore and the movie had Damuanna, Anant Kumar, Asha, Satish Vyas, Dhumal. I am not aware who are Asha and Damunna in the cast.

This movie, which was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan had Surendra, Munawwar Sultana, Zebunissa, Agha, Shahnawaz, W. M. Khan, Leela Mishra, Rita, Shaheda, Subhasini, Reehan, Mohammad Afzal etc in it.
