When one looks at it, R D Burman, Rajesh Khanna, and Kishore Kumar rose to the top, taking the film world by storm almost simultaneously. In many of these movies, the three in fact worked together as well.

But their careers diverged as far as staying at the top was concerned. While Kishore Kumar remained at the top throughout his life, Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom deserted him by the mid 1970s. R D Burman continued to rule throughout 1970s, before he found himself upstaged, not by better music, but by music of the nature that testified to the fact that the saying “if you cannot dazzle them by brilliance, baffle them by bulshitting” applied to HFM after 1980s. R D Burman could not cope with that kind of music that became the vogue after 1980s and he slowly began to lose ground and assignments, before finding a late second wind with “1942 a Love Story”(1994) which came a bit too late for him as he had already expired by the time music of this movie began to make waves.

Most Indians are well aware about Subhash Chandra Bose, who was easily one of the most charismatic and inspirational figures among the Indian freedom fighting leaders of pre independence era.

Hindi movies too have been impressed enough with him and there have been quite a few movies featuring him, viz. “Netaji Subhash”(1947), “Samaadhi”(1950), “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose”(1966), “Subhash Chandra”(1978) etc.

The latest movie on Netaji has been “Bose-The Forgotten hero”(2004).

“Shaan” (1980) was a movie directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by Sippy Films. Music was by Rahul Dev Burman and Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. The credits of the movie show a dancer shaking herself to Usha Uthup’s singing and Mohd. Rafi is credited as late Mohd. Rafi. (The release date of the movie was 12 Dec 1980.) Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and RD were the other singers.

Amitabh Bachchan- Shashi Kapoor- Shatrughan Sinha were the male lead with Sunil Dutt being credited as special appearance. Rakhee- Parveen Babi- Bindiya Goswami were the female lead with Helen and Bindu putting in guest appearances. Johnny Walker headed the supporting cast and Mazhar Khan made his debut in this movie and Kulbhushan Kharbanda got his first villain role, though the movie didn’t do the same wonders for him as Ramesh Sippy’s previous “Sholay” did for Amjad Khan. Salim- Javed were the script writers. The movie was of the typical-Bollywood-masala genre. Sunil Dutt played an upright cop with Amitabh and Shashi as his time-wasting, happy-go-lucky, “naalaayak” brothers who are jolted to being responsible persons when their brother gets gruesomely-murdered. Then the movie follows standard lines of the brothers seeking out the villain with the help of Shatru and entering the villain’s den in disguise as folk dancers etc. in between all this they also find time to con a few people, fall in love with the heroines, have lover’s tiffs (roothna manana etc.) That gives scope for around six/ seven songs in the movie of which two are love songs, one a club dance, etc. etc.

Missing Films of 1960s – 50
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Films get made, they are processed and censored, they get released – and quite a number of them simply fade away without a trace. The fate is shared by many a films. Unless the film was a success, or was produced by a big production house, or had a cast of actors or music director associated with it, who were well known.

I do not mean to say that all films were disasters, and were financial debacles. No. Rather many of the B/C grade adventures and stunt type films, would actually do very good business in the 2nd and 3rd tiered circuits, catering to a class of audience, who were avowed loyalists to this genre. So they may not have been failures as such. But then, not being associated with big names in the industry, there generally was no one to look after them, once the first and second runs in the theatres were done with. What with the celluloid originals requiring large storage spaces, and also the controlled environment to maintain, most producer simply turned their backs on these films, and moved on with their pockets filled as much as the film’s run could give them. After that, it was the trash heap, or the fire of silver extractors, that simply destroyed so many of these films. ‘Heritage’ is probably a word that our film industry simply does not comprehend.

Today, 23rd January 2018 is the 121st Birth Anniversary of India’s best known revolutionary- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. His life story and name is known to every Indian. It is not only very inspiring, but is very motivating as well. Unfortunately Netaji did not get the kind of help or support he needed and deserved for his Military action, from Indian politicians of his times. Netaji’s philosophy clashed with the Non-Violence policy espoused by Gandhi and his Congress Party. He pursued his dream single handedly. It is once in a Century that such a person is born. My respectful obeisance to Netaji.

On this occasion, here is a song describing his life which was nothing but a life of Balidaan or sacrifice.

“मैं लेखक हूँ, लेखक”।

The year – 1956. The film – that zany, crazy, fun and pathos filled runaway hit titled ‘Funtoosh’. Remembered today for a fantastic portfolio of songs. And a very sensitive and effective performance by Dev Anand.

The film has a noisy opening inside a mental asylum. Dev Anand, one of the inmates, is being released to the outside world. He knows himself, as do others, only as ‘funtoosh’. Apparently he has endeared everyone in that blessed place, for when he leaves, everyone offers him a gift, piling him and his pockets with trinkets, small tokens, a hat, a pair of sunglasses, garlands, rings and what not. From a world that is upside down compared to the outside, ‘funtoosh’ makes a grand exit on a tricycle, smoking a pipe.

The list of actors includes Shyam, Lakshmi Chhaaya, Sujata, Bhagwan, Sabina, Sadhna Khote, Prem Sagar, Jagdish Kanwal, Ajay and Radheyshyam etc. The nine songs of this film are shared between two song writers – four written by Anjaan and five written by Yogesh. This song is by Yogesh Gaud. The wonderful musical compositions of this film are prepared by Suresh Kumar.
