Today’s song is from the film Dekho ji-47.

The film was made by Punjab Film Corporation and was produced and directed by its owner Wali Sahab. He also wrote the lyrics. The music was by Tufail Faruqi and his assistant Sabir Hussain ( 5 and 6 songs credited respectively).

This was one of the films of 1947, from which almost everyone- the cast, producer, director, lyricist, composers etc etc all migrated to Pakistan after Partition- some immediately and few after some time. This was of course not unusual. As the year 1947 began, news was circulating about the partition. Like many other industries, Film industry was also worried. There was an air of uncertainty. Who will stay and who will migrate was hotly debated in the privacy of homes, studios and clubs. People looked at each others with suspicion. Muslims were worried about their safety in India, in spite of the assurances by Gandhi and Nehru.

Missing Films of 1960s – 103
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The film that we bring on board today is ‘Sati Sulochana’ from 1969. One more film that is rarely heard about, although the video of this film is available. And once again, lovely songs that have not been explored. The sound of this song seems like it was heard on the radio, but that was a long time back.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 26
————————————————

Ten years ago, this day – the score card was six films, and six songs. The songs posted on that day are listed below.

Naino Me Pyaar Dole Sheroo 1957
Kaare Kaare Baadraa Bhaabhi 1957
Jab Baadal Lahraaya Chhoo Mantar 1956
Dil Pukaare Aare Aare Jewel Thief 1967
Tumhaari Nazar Kyun Khafa Ho Gayi Do Kaliyaan 1968
Har Haseen Cheez Ka Main Talabgaar Hoon Saudaagar 1973

Out of the six films, five films have since been Yippeee’d on the blog. I notice this interesting push for completing songs of a film. It seems that the preference is always to complete songs of films from 1950s and 1960s. Most of the time, when we are searching for a suitable selection for this Ten Years Challenge series, the films with songs pending are most likely to be not from 1950s and 1960s. I think it is a combination of preference for the melody and music of those two decades, plus the availability. On these two counts, the films from 1950s and 1960s would score the highest, and hence their quicker movement towards Yippeee status.

Hullo to Atuldom

Today’s song/ post is to wish a Doe-eyed beauty on her birthday. At the when she was a busy movie star – starring in Bengali and Hindi movies – I had no clue about who she was, where she was from etc, and I didn’t care to find as at that stage in my life I was more of a watcher and not researcher. I have started trying to find things about the people who I used to like back then only now and I am amazed by the things I read and see.

So, today’s Bengali beauty was a convent school teacher to start of, who also tried her hand at modelling, participated in the Femina Miss India contest of 1971 and was judged Miss India World 1971. She went on to represent India at the Miss World 1971 and Queen of the Pacific pageant held in Australia where she was 1st runner-up. She also happens to be Anitha Guha’s niece. I am talking of the beautiful Prema Narayan- who made a name for herself playing Dhanno in the Uttam Kumar -Sharmila Tagore starrer “Amanush”. She was mostly cast as a dancer/ vamp or supporting roles with a western touch to her character. We remember her in songs of “Armaan”. “Ponga Pandit” etc as a person whose eyes are full of mischief.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Vaseeyat-1940.

Though this film was made by Minerva Movietone, neither it was directed by Sohrab Modi nor he had acted in it. The film was directed by K.M.Multani, who also wrote the screenplay for this film. Multani had directed his first film also from Minerva only-Vaasanti-38 – a social film. This too was without Sohrab Modi in any capacity. Multani further directed 3 more films, Virginia-40, Ujala-42 and Umang-44.

“Bahu Beti”(1952) was directed by C L Dheer for Badoda Theatre Limited Bombay. This “social” movie had Geeta Bali, Amarnath, Jaswant, Vijaylaxmi, Rashid, Leela Mishra, S Nazeer, Nazirabai etc in it.

Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019)-Song number 25
—————————————————-

This is my First song post for ‘The 10 year Challenge’ series. Today, 10 years ago, on this day, 6 songs were posted. They were 1 song each for films ‘Bahut Din Huye’ (1954), ‘Marine Drive’ (1955), ‘Naag Devta’ (1962), ‘Bees Saal Baad’ (1962), ‘Prince’ (1969) and ‘Lootmaar’ (1980).

From the day it started, I was keen on participating, but everyday that I checked I found films either belonging to the 60s to 80s or films which were already Yippeee’d. I became helpless. Not that I can not or don’t want to write on songs of films of 70s and beyond, but they are not of my liking. Further I like to write only on songs or films, where I have something substantial to offer to our readers.
