Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Tilottama-1954.
Made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia, it was directed by the Trick Master Babubhai Mistry. Music was by the multitasking expert S.N.Tripathi. The cast included Chitra, Kailash, Maruti, Babu raje, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant, B.M.Vyas and a long list of small time actors, who were regulars in such films. The Lyrics were by G.S.Nepali.
Tilottama was an extraordinarily beautiful apsara from the Swarga. She was especially created by Vishwakarma on Brahma ji’s suggestion. The first chapter of mahabharata – The Adi Parva – mentions that Maharshi Narad detailed the story of Tilottama to Pandavas and warned them that one Draupadi as a wife to 5 Pandavas could become a cause of conflict and that they must be careful about it.

Atuldom is a lovely place to be. We have some like-minded film music lovers who make the job of post writing very easy. Let me explain.
I was planning a post on a song from the 1999 released, Milan Luthria directed and Ramesh Taurani & Kumar S. Taurani (under their banner of Tips Cassettes) produced film “Kachche Dhaage”. I was planning the post as a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan whose death anniversary happens to be on 16th August. He passed away on this date in 1997 when he was only 49.

उर्मिले त्रिवार वंदन तुला (Urmile trivaar vandan tulaa) is a Marathi non-film bhajan rendered by Ram Phatak which I used to listen on the radio in my younger days. The meaning of the first line is ‘hey Urmila, my thrice salute to you’. The salutation by the poet is because she was an unsung character in Ramayan. She was the wife of Lakshman and younger sister of Seeta. When Ram was exiled along with Seeta for 14 years, Lakshaman decided to accompany Ram and Seeta to protect them during the exile. Urmila also wanted to join Lakshman. But she was asked by Lakshman to stay back and take care of his aged parents in Ayodhya during their absence. During those 14 years, Urmila is said to have slept continuously so that Lakshman can remain awake to protect Ram and Seeta.
I had forgotten about this Marathi song for a long time. While I was researching on Khayyam for writing a tributary article on the occasion of his 6thth Remembrance Day on August 19, 2025, I realised that his wife, Jagjit Kaur was the ‘Urmila’ in his life who sacrificed her aristocratic life to marry a struggling music director. While the selflessness of Urmila cannot be strictly comparable as Jagjit Kaur and her husband Khayyam spent their life together. But, apart from her aristocratic comfort, she sacrificed her playback singing career after her marriage with Khayyam sometime in 1954 in her own volition as she had said in her interviews. She did not seek playback singing assignments either from her husband or from others. Instead, she decided to assist her husband in whatever manner – either professionally or on the domestic front. She had said in an interview as late as 2019 that she recorded the song under Khayyam only because the scheduled playback singers did not turn up for recording the songs or the producers/directors of the films suggested her name for the songs.

Today’s song is from a mysterious film – But Tarash-1947.
When I first heard this film’s name, for a very long time, I was puzzled about its meaning. First I thought ‘ But’ is written by mistake for ‘Boot’. But Then what was Tarash ?
Was it also by mistake, for ‘Trash’ ? No, it could not be !
Very wisely, I referred to my dictionary of ” Urdu into English and vice versa”. Conveniently, it lists Urdu words in Roman script, so one who can not read Urdu, can also use this dictionary easily. This dictionary is compiled by The Rev. T.Cravel,M.A. and it was published in 1889 from Lucknow. This book is one of my prized possessions and I got this from my father 70 years ago. This 136 year old book has to be handled very carefully as its pages have become yellowish brown and very sensitive for breakages. The dictionary meaning of ” But Tarash” is ‘One who sculpts an idol’. In Hindi we call it a ‘Shilpkar’ or a ‘ Moortikar’.
