Today’s song is from a film ‘Ek Hi Bhool’ from 1940. It was a film made by Prakash Pictures and was directed by Vijay Bhatt. The lyricist was ‘Anuj’ and the music director was the favourite of Prakash – Shankar Rao Vyas. The film’s cast was Jairaj, Mehtab, Umakant, Amirbai, Prahlad Dutt, Baby Meena (Meena kumari) and also a Dog called Tiger. (I always wonder when people can see that it is a dog, then why the owners name it as Tiger to mislead others ?).

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 36
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Seriously, for some reason, I have always carried this impression that this song is already posted on our blog. And not just that, also that it has been posted long back. The song itself has not been seen online for a long time. And dear friend, Shri Arvinder ji, has been requesting me for months now to upload it. And I have been postponing it, for reasons of other preoccupations. His requests have recently been turning more sinister. So I was just by the way checking status of films of 1960s. And found that this song is not on the blog.

Or

Or

Or maybe

Or maybe even

And but why not

If I start listing favorites, then it will take a long time to get to the matter of the subject. Ah yes, the songs listed above clearly point to the artist this article is about. The songs listed are iconic as well as popular hits. When she recorded “Kabhi Tanhaai’on Mein. . .”, and her father listened to it for the first time, his prophetic reaction was that this song is going to remain in popular memory for generations. And these words are so true for so many of her other songs, if the above sampler is anything to go by. Going beyond the barriers of time and space, her songs continue to enchant and touch listeners and lovers of this music, across the world.

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 10
———————————————————————

I have just finished noting down lyrics of the song I have chosen – it has taken me one hour at least. I have listened to the song close to 4-5 times. I had to listen to some parts again and again trying to figure out what the singer was saying, revise my lyrics and note down which portions were sung by the male or female singer and which was sung by them both. I do this only once in a while, not being the owner of the blog but an occasional participant. It made me appreciate more and more the amount of dedication the usual writers put in. To combine all this with a write up to explain the song, add anecdotes related to the song and sometimes, stories that led to the song is all hard work, believe me. In this age and time of quick fixes, short cuts, bullet points and shortened attention spans it is difficult to even understand this kind of dedication.

Today’s song is from a really unknown and unheard of film of the early era – ‘Fauladi Mukka’ (1936).

So far 3 films with this title are made in Hindi. The other two films were made in 1965 and 1985. The 1965 movie was a regular C grade action stunt movie of actor Aazad and the 1985 movie was a Tamil film dubbed in Hindi. It starred Rajinikant. I call him a sophisticated stunt actor, although he is known to have worked in serious social films too. But generally, in the world beyond Tamilnadu, Rajinikant is equivalent to unimaginable, logic-basher, nature-defying stunts which make you not only wonder but also bring you a smile.

Missing Films of 1960s – 74
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

In 1940, a film by the name ‘Thief Of Tatar’ was released. Then in 1955 came another film titled ‘Tatar Ka Chor’. And after another 13 years, in 1968, came the film ‘Tatar Ki Haseena’. Just like the ‘Alibaba’ of Arbian Nights and the ‘Thief Of Baghdad’, the Tatar subject also seemed to hold a special interest for Hindi film makers for some time.

Missing Films of 1960s – 72
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s film of the 1960s being introduced is ‘Badmaash’ from 1969.  A very obscure and unfamiliar film, that is known only by its presence in the Geet Kosh. But I was surprised when I checked out the cast. This film belongs to the Sheikh Mukhtar genre. His films may not be blockbusters, but still they are known only because they are Sheikh Mukhtar films. Even so, this film is lesser known in comparison.

Missing Films of 1960s – 71
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Although into the seventies now, in terms of songs covered in this series, still there is a lot more to cover. Many more films from the 1960s are still waiting for their debut here on our blog.

Today’s film is ‘Sakhi Lutera’ from 1969. As discussed in some earlier post, the word ‘sakhi‘ here is not the Hindi word with the meaning – a lady friend. The word in the film title is an Urdu word that means – generous, munificent, a person who is liberal in giving to others. As you may be already guessing, and rightly so, this film is about the legendary thief Robin Hood, who steals from the rich and distributes to the poor.

Today is the birth anniversary of playback singer Madhubala Jhaveri. She was born this day in 1935.

Madhubala was born into a musically inclined family of renowned artists. Her mother, Smt Hirabai Jhaveri and her aunt Smt Sharmila Margaonkar, were both well known singers, and often performed on All India Radio. Although brought up in an atmosphere of music, she was initially not inclined to pursue it as a career. In fact after her matriculation, she joined the JJ School of Arts, deciding for herself that the devotion and time required for classical music training was not what she wanted. But the fate had planned otherwise. In a chance encounter, music director Hansraj Behl heard her sing in a private gathering, and was immediately attracted to her voice. He was searching for a new voice to sing for him in his upcoming film ‘Apni Izzat’ (1952). He invited her to sing for this film.
