Hullo Atuldom

Back to writing after a gap of 3 weeks. Lovely three weeks. Spent among the hills of North- East India and South India. Must thank my nephew for insisting that I accompany them. If the Himalayas and its snow-clad peaks are a heavenly sight so are the mountain ranges of the Nilgiris in the south – the common feature being acres of tea gardens. For the second weekend outing to the Nilgiris, I hold my son and niece responsible.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 66# Singer – Mukesh
———————————————–——————–

Just few days back I came across this song that I am presenting today. After listening to it I was feeling like maybe I had heard it on ‘radio’ many many years back. When I listened to it once I just kept listening to it again and again and with every new day this song is growing on me, on and on. The song is from the 1978 movie ‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ and it is sung by Mukesh ji.

The film that we are bringing to the Yippeee-land today, has been waiting for the final song for the last almost three years. The 1970 film ‘Maa Ka Aanchal’ had made its debut on the blog on 10th May, 2012. Exactly three years later, on 10th May, 2015, the fifth song of this film was posted. As I look at these dates, I am tempted to defer this posting to 10th May, just to complete a sequence. But then I thought better of it. 🙂

ना जाने क्या हुआ

The touch was of magic. But the real life is so different from reel life. A career that spanned well over five decades, the opportunities for this magic touch weren’t many.

Remembering Naqsh Lyallpuri on the anniversary of his birth (24th Feb).

Missing Films of 1960s – 50
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Films get made, they are processed and censored, they get released – and quite a number of them simply fade away without a trace. The fate is shared by many a films. Unless the film was a success, or was produced by a big production house, or had a cast of actors or music director associated with it, who were well known.

I do not mean to say that all films were disasters, and were financial debacles. No. Rather many of the B/C grade adventures and stunt type films, would actually do very good business in the 2nd and 3rd tiered circuits, catering to a class of audience, who were avowed loyalists to this genre. So they may not have been failures as such. But then, not being associated with big names in the industry, there generally was no one to look after them, once the first and second runs in the theatres were done with. What with the celluloid originals requiring large storage spaces, and also the controlled environment to maintain, most producer simply turned their backs on these films, and moved on with their pockets filled as much as the film’s run could give them. After that, it was the trash heap, or the fire of silver extractors, that simply destroyed so many of these films. ‘Heritage’ is probably a word that our film industry simply does not comprehend.

Wish that we could, but we are powerless. We can’t make them stay, ones who have to go away. Jaidev, the master of enchanting melodic creations. His film songs may number just about two hundred. But the impact he left behind him, is incomparable.

Remembering Jaidev on the 30th anniversary of his passing away (6th January, 1987).

Words like ‘tragic’, ‘unsung’, ‘unlucky’, ‘jinxed’ swim through the mind when one considers the life and career of this eminent music director. The only MD in the industry to have bagged three national awards for music direction. And all his life he lived in a one room flat near Churchgate in Bombay – a residence provided by an beneficent music lover. And when that benefactor passed away, his familial survivors reclaimed even that humble dwelling.

Aah so, new year resolutions – just like carrying heavy burdens. It is only so far that one can haul them. Some can lug them short distances, some can lug them for longer distances. And only rarely can one continue to bear a resolution, on and on.

Atul ji’s tenacity is a legend by now. Maybe not all resolves, but at least he has been able to maintain the ‘no-dot-days’ resolution for, now let us see – the last dot-day on record is 7th September, 2016. Wow – we now have a string of 484 days of continued posting, which translates to 1 year, 3 months 28 days. This blog has been updated with at least one new song every day, without a break – for the past 1 year, 3 months and 28 days continuously (the calculation includes the two end dates of this time period). There have been other breaks in earlier months of 2016 itself. There may or may not be a longer unbroken string of days prior to 2016, but that has to be checked in detail. I have not yet completely researched all the periods, prior to this duration.

A voice, that is as soft and pleasing as cool breeze. And a singing that is most natural, with no efforts for any artificial embellishments to the rendition.  A voice that is not formally trained. And yet, this voice and the persona behind it, have become synonymous with being the first lady of Bangla cinema.

Remembering Kaanan Devi on her remembrance day. She passed away this day (17th July) in 1992.

‘Shehzaadi’ (1947) is a film about which not much information is available online except that it was produced under the banner of Shalimar Pictures owned by WZ Ahmed and the film belonged to the costume drama genre. I had searched extensively on the internet about the star cast and the director but drew a blank. Earlier, I had even a doubt whether the film was actually released.

Today, I am presenting a duet song “Zulm Bhi Karten Hain Aur Kehten Hain Fariyaad Na Kar” sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Mohammed Rafi in ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ (1960). This song has been in my radar for more than two years, to present in the blog. However, I got overtly involved with locating the rare songs from the films of 1940s and share those. During this period, I thought that Rafi fans or ‘Sureeli’ Suman Kalyanpur fans among the Atulites would post this song on the Blog. But this did not happen. So I am destined to present this song.
