Kaaga re jaa re jaa re

Until 1970, I was only aware of old Hindi film songs from popular films like ‘Mahal’ (1949), ‘Barsaat’ (1949),’Malhar’ (1951),’Baiju Bawara’ (1952), ‘Ashiana’ (1952), ‘Patita’ (1953), ‘Anarkali’ (1953), ‘Seema’ (1955) and many more of such films. It was only when I was initiated by a friend into some lesser known gems from the films which I have never heard of, my interest in such songs grew. My friend used to arrange periodic meetings of like minded persons, mostly in his house. He had a mind boggling collections of such songs in 78 RPM gramophone records ( I guess, it was nearly 1000 in numbers). He had also had some audio cassettes containing lesser known songs recorded from Radio Ceylon and also from 78 RPM records held by some of his friends. During those meetings, he would select some rare songs and play on his Gerard record changer attached to his radiogram followed by discussions. Since I was a novice in this segment of old Hindi film songs, I was only a listener to those discussions. Later, I became aware of the fact that behind tha facade of popular old Hindi film songs, there exists a big store of lesser known jewels.

“Veer Rajputani” (1955) was a Basant Pictures Production. It was directed by J B H Wadia. The movie had Manhar Desai, Shakila, S. N. Tripathi, Bipin Gupta, Helen, Meenakshi, B. M. Vyas, Anwar Hussein, Babu Raje, Sharda etc in it.

Today (11 October) is the 70th birth anniversary of Amitabh Bachchan. He was born this day in 1942.
Today he is a well established legend, but his beginnings were quite shaky and uninspiring. In fact, he had delivered a string of flop movies and he was on the verge of packing up and going back when “Zanjeer” (1973) was released and it became a hit. And after that Amitabh Bachchan did not have to look back.

“Waapas” (1969) was a S S Chitra Mandir Presentation. It was directed by Satyen Bose. The movie had Ajay, Satyajit, Kishwar, Azra, Leela Mishra, Shekhar Purohit, Parveen Paul, Jankidas, Chandrima Bhaduri, Alka, Kumud Tripathi etc in it.

One proud feather that this blog carries in its cap is that all the Hindi/Urdu songs sung by Saigal Saab, both from films and non-film, are now posted on this blog. After Saigal Saab’s non-film songs started to appear on this blog, a general discussion ensued amongst the readers and contributors, wishing to see more of non-film songs posted here, from other singers also. And so followed some more non-film songs from stalwarts such as Pankaj Mullick, Jagmohan ‘Sursagar’, Talat Mehmood, Juthika Roy, Geeta Dutt, Kamla Jharia and CH Atma have found a place here. I had never heard of the film SANYASI (1945) until a few months back. The film was produced under the banner of Kardar Productions and directed by A R Kardar. The cast included Shamim Bano, Amar, Shyam Kumar, Ghulam Mohammed. I checked the available songs on internet and found to my surprise that there were 10 songs in this film out of which 7 songs were sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali (both solo and duets). These songs were written by Pandit Madhur and set to music by Naushad. Other than these, I am not able to get other details about this film such as genre and box office success or otherwise of the film.
