Produced by P. Aadi Narayana Rao and directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah in 1957, the Hindi version Suvarna Sundari (original in Telugu) is rightfully remembered most for its iconic raagmalika (a multi-raag number) – perhaps a first in a Hindi movie – the famed Lata-Rafi duet Kuhu-kuhu bole koyaliya. It is already on this blog with a comprehensive write up both on the movie and this number.

When Atul wrote to me in his usual polite way the other day that I must write a post on this song I was taken aback. I have been a (mostly silent) reader of his blog and I have even written a few pieces for it but none for a very long time. I have discussed as many as five songs from “Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen” (1963). They are all fantastic songs. And the interesting thing about these songs are, they are sung by different singers (more or less). Just imagine five outstanding songs in a movie sung by Rafi, Lata, Manna Dey, Mukesh ans Suman Kalyanpur !

Now, think of Helen, and the very first thing that will come to mind is a dance song. In a variety of dance forms, whether that be a folk dance (a handful), a classical (very very few indeed), a fun song (very many) or a cabaret dance (a huge number), when one sees Helen on the screen, she is singing a song, and dancing. Some time back on a particular post, we came across a Helen dance song in which she is not singing herself, someone else is. In response, others readers identified more such songs where Helen did not sing, while she was dancing on the screen.
