It was 29 days ago (on 9 January 2026) that we had reached blog song post number 19800. That song post also happened to be 300th duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. If 300 duets of a pair of singers is an enormous achievement then what will we say about twice that number of duets ? 600 duets !! That is a mind boggling mind numbing number of duets. This feat is achieved by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhonsle in the blog.

‘Taqdeer Ki Tope’ (1939) was produced and directed by Vithaldas Panchotia under the banner of Shri Bharat Lakshmi Pictures. The cast included Master Nissar, Husn Bano, Vithaldas Panchotia, Jyotsana Gupta, Sultana Banu, Fakir Mohammed, Abdul Kabuli, Narbada Shankar, Master Gama, Shanti Devi, Aruna Devi etc. I have no idea about the genre of the film. I came across the name of the film while listening, for the first time, the audio clip of a song rendered by Master Nisaar. I found the song interesting because it is rendered by Master Nissar in the Hindustani semi-classical style. Before I listened to the song, I was under the impression that Master Nissar was an actor first and had to sing for himself as during his time, the playback singing system was yet to be evolved. But his voice sounded like a trained singer.

Today I introduce a song from a movie which makes a debut on this blog. The movie I am talking about is “Laila” released in 1984 and the song is a fast romantic one sung by Kishore Kumar – “Ho Gaye Deewane Tum Ko Dekh Kar”.

The 1984 film Laila is a romantic drama directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. It is notably remembered as one of the early films of Anil Kapoor’s career, though its release was slightly delayed, leading to Woh 7 Din being his official debut as a leading man.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-8

This duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the 1990 movie ‘Dushman’. This title “Dushman” was also released in the years 1939, 1957, 1971 and 1998. All these four movies are already represented in the blog. “Dushman”(1990) came 19 years after “Dushman “(1971). Among all “Dushman” ( 🙂 ) I guess that the movie released in 1971 starring Rajesh Khanna in the title role (Dushman chaachaa 🙂 ) must be the most popular and successful of all these movies.

“Dushman”(1990) was directed by Shakti Samanta for ‘Shakti Films, Bombay’ i.e. his home productions. The cast of this movie has Mithoon Chakravarty, Mandakini, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Alok Nath, Deepa Sahi, Tanuja, Biplab Chatterjee, Vijay Arora, Ranjeet, Tarun Ghosh, Manek Dutt, Bob Christo, Ravi Nandi, Shakti Thakur, Anirudh Agarwal and others. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 12.03.1990.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-7

Today’s Pancham composed duet is from the movie ‘Bahurani-1989’. I am not sure if I had watched this movie. It appears a familiar movie but I have no recollections about this movie. On our blog we already have movies with this title that were released in the years 1940, 1950 and 1963. Today’s ‘Bahuraani’ will be the fourth such title on this blog and it is from the year 1989. In addition, we also have a movie titled ‘Teen Bahuraaniyaan’ in the blog released in 1968.

“Bahurani-1989” was directed by Manick Chatterjee for ‘Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd, Bombay’. Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani were the producers of this movie and it was passed by Censor Board on 18.12.1989. The cast of this movie has Rekha, Rakesh Roshan, Utpal Dutt, Usha Kiran, Rakesh Bedi, Deven Verma, Urmila Bhatt, Guddi Maruti, Aasha Sharma, Darshan, Inderjeet, Sunder, Aruna Irani and others. ‘Bandhan Baahon Kaa’ (1988) was produced by O P Bajaj and Mahendra Mansinghka and was directed by Govind Munis. The cast included Raj Kiran, Swapna, Brahmachari, Hullad Muradabadi, Rajesh Puri, Avnish Pratap, Manoj Tiwari, Rita Katyal etc. The film was based on a short story, ‘Kariye Chhima’ by Hindi novelist, Shivani (real name: Gaura Pant). In Kumaon language, ‘Chhima’ is a derived word from ‘Kshama’ (forgiveness). It appears that the film had a delayed release as the song album was released in 1985 with the film’s original title, ‘Kariye Kshama’.

The cast of the Hindi movie ‘Itihaas-1987’ had Raaj Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Rati Agnihotri, Anil Kapoor, Mohnish Behl, Danny Denzongpa, Suresh Oberoi, Nameeta Chandra, Dinesh Hingoo, Master Suresh, Hanifa, Ramesh Goel, Prema Narayan, Leena Das, Iftekhar, Jalal Agha, Raj Mehra and others. ———————————————————————
(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s 32nd Remembrance Day)
——————————————————————

Today 4th January 2026 is the 33rd Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman who is fondly known as ‘Pancham’. He was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4th January 1994 at the age of only 54.

Today on Pancham’s 33rd Remembrance Day we will be paying our tributes to him by listening to some of his compositions that were not yet presented till now.

While much of his musical treasure is already available for music lovers to savour, some more of this treasure is still being unearthed and is being shared online. I hope this process of digging up his as yet unknown compositions will continue in future as well.

From an estimated figure of 1755 songs from 331 Hindi movies composed by Pancham we have so far covered 944 songs from 254 Hindi movies on this blog.

I start day’s proceedings by presenting a song from the 1985 movie ‘AMEER AADMI GHAREEB AADMI’. It was directed by Amjad Khan for ‘Cinema International’s’. Shehla Khan and Vinay Sinha were the producers of this movie. Actor Amjad Khan who directed this movie had also credited as writer and editor of the movie as well. Dialogues for this movie were written by Akhtar-Ul-Iman. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.02.1985.
