Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-11
Today’s duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the 1993 movie ‘Aaja Meri Jaan’. This movie was directed by Ketan Anand for ‘Gulshan Kumar’s ‘Super Cassette Industries’. Gulshan Kumar was the producer of this movie which introduced his younger brother Krishan Kumar. Actress Tanya Singh (daughter of musician Ajit Singh) made her debut in this movie and Krishan Kumar got married to her later.

‘Dozakh’ (2015) was a film about whose existence I came to know about very recently thanks to Sant Kabir’s couplets which was the only song in this film. The title of the film itself put me in a confusion as I heard this word for the first time. Online search revealed that ‘dozakh’ is a Persian word which means ‘hell’ and ‘jahannum’ in Arabic. The full title of the film is ‘Dozakh – In Search of Heaven’. The idea behind the title is that the director wanted to emphasise on a dogmatic belief that a person who strictly follows his own religious guidelines and hates other religions will go to heaven.
The film had Lalit Tiwari and the child actor, Garrick Chaudhari in the main roles, supported by Ruby Saini, Nazim Khan, Khushboo Seth, Pawan Tiwari, Irfaan Rizvi etc. The film was produced by Zaigham Imam and Pawan Tiwari and was directed by Zaigham Imam. This film can be put under the category of the parallel cinema. The film was shown in some international fiom festivals – both in India and abroad during 2013-14. It received Censor Certificate for theatrical release on August 30, 2014 but the film could get the thetrical release in India on March 20, 2015.

TV serial Song number 1:
‘Mahabharat’ (1988), the TV Serial produced by B R Chopra and directed by Ravi Chopra was telecast on Doordarshan in 94 episodes from October 2, 1988, to June 24, 1990. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Rahi Masoom Raza. There were 20 main actors and about 60 actors in supporting roles apart from some actors appearing specifically in one or two episodes.
The episodes were telecast every Sunday and I have watched almost all the episodes when these were telecast. Those who have watched the episodes would recall that each episode used to start with the title song, ‘ath shree Mahabharat kathha’ and to end with a theme song of each episode which were rendered by Mahendra Kapoor. But there were many other songs in some episodes which I have almost forgotten except a few, that too, only the context and not the songs. Fortunately, Wikipedia has listed the songs of TV Serial, Mahabharat (1988) numbering 22 songs (including the title song) rendered by eight playback singers which include Mahendra Kapoor, Rajkamal, Anuradha Paudwal, Sadhana Sargam, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Nitin Mukesh, Suresh Wadkar and Roopa Ganguly. The songs were written by Pandit Narendra Sharma apart from songs with traditional lyrics. All the songs were set to music by Rajkamal.

It was 29 days ago (on 9 January 2026) that we had reached blog song post number 19800. That song post also happened to be 300th duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. If 300 duets of a pair of singers is an enormous achievement then what will we say about twice that number of duets ? 600 duets !! That is a mind boggling mind numbing number of duets. ‘Taqdeer Ki Tope’ (1939) was produced and directed by Vithaldas Panchotia under the banner of Shri Bharat Lakshmi Pictures. The cast included Master Nissar, Husn Bano, Vithaldas Panchotia, Jyotsana Gupta, Sultana Banu, Fakir Mohammed, Abdul Kabuli, Narbada Shankar, Master Gama, Shanti Devi, Aruna Devi etc. I have no idea about the genre of the film. I came across the name of the film while listening, for the first time, the audio clip of a song rendered by Master Nisaar. I found the song interesting because it is rendered by Master Nissar in the Hindustani semi-classical style. Before I listened to the song, I was under the impression that Master Nissar was an actor first and had to sing for himself as during his time, the playback singing system was yet to be evolved. But his voice sounded like a trained singer.

Today I introduce a song from a movie which makes a debut on this blog. The movie I am talking about is “Laila” released in 1984 and the song is a fast romantic one sung by Kishore Kumar – “Ho Gaye Deewane Tum Ko Dekh Kar”.
The 1984 film Laila is a romantic drama directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. It is notably remembered as one of the early films of Anil Kapoor’s career, though its release was slightly delayed, leading to Woh 7 Din being his official debut as a leading man.
