Recently, I had the occasion to read an essay titled The Magical World of Bombay Talkies, written by Professor Lalit Joshi. The paper has been written in the context of making of the cultural space for the nation in waiting and the role of the Bombay Talkies Ltd. (BT) in the evolution of Bombay film industry. The byline in one of the news programs on the 6th evening was – “फिल्मों का एक युग, मिनटों में सिमट गया” (“filmon ka ek yug, minton mein simat gaya”) (an entire era of (Hindi) filmdom, faded away in a matter of minutes). A completely unexpected departure happened earlier in the day. Very much in the saddle, and very much in the busy prime of his career, Om Puri passed away suddenly. The amount of intensity he packed into his characters, and in his dialogue delivery, it seemed he was going to last forever on the screen. Sixty six years they say. Goodness, it just seems like yesterday that Bhikhu picked up that axe used to cut wood at a cremation ground, and brutally attacked his own sister.
