There are some prominent Hindi film actors whose names are mainly associated with ‘middle of the road’ and ‘off-beat’ cinemas though they have also worked in mainstream Hindi films. The names that comes to my mind are Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Dipti Naval etc. Almost all of them made their Hindi film debut under the direction of Shyam Benegal. I was not aware that Rajeshwari Sachdev was also one of such actors until recently while checking her filmography. She has worked on stage, television and films. She is also a singer and a dancer.

The cast of the film was Suraiyya, Shyam, Badri Prasad, Jayant, Om Prakash, Ram Avtar, Ismail, Mohna and many others. The film was directed by M Sadiq. The songs were by Shakeel Badayuni and the music director was Shyam Sundar.

‘Apna Paraaya’ (1942) was produced by Mehboob Khan and directed by Ramchandra Thakur for National Studio, Bombay. The movie had Shahu Modak, Hansa Wadkar, Urmila, Sankatha Prasad, Qaiyam Ali, Agha, Jyoti, Dulari, Gulzar, Pesi Patel, Raj Rani, Wasekar etc in it.

In my last article, I had discussed Basu Chatterjee’s film, ‘Gudgudee’ (1997) which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Seven Year Itch’ (1955). In this article, I have taken up for discussion yet another film of Basu Chatterjee which was inspired from a Hollywood film, ‘The Fortune Cookie’ (1966). The film is ‘Laakhon Ki Baat’ (1984). The film was produced and directed by Basu Chatterjee. The star cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Farooq Shaikh, Anita Raj, Anjali Sen, Utpal Dutt, Pinchoo Kapoor, Dinesh Hingoo, Subbiraj, Javed Khan, Bhagwan Sinha etc. Neither the name of the storywriter nor the acknowledgement of the inspiration for the film was mentioned in the credit titles of film.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Shikar’ (1955).
Films with the title ‘Shikar’ were made in 1955, 1965, 1999 and 2001. Then there were films called ‘Shikari’, made in 1932, 1946, 1963 and 1991. To top it all, there was a film with the title ‘Shikar Shikari Ka’ made in 2010. I am not giving these details for fun, but after you read this film’s story, you will yourself say that the title of this film should have been ‘Shikar Shikari Ki’ !

In the 1970s, Basu Chatterjee was one of those Hindi film directors who made films on the stories which a majority of the filmi audience could relate to their own every day life. Starting with ‘Saara Aakaash’ (1969), he made the classic films such as ‘Rajanigandha’ (1974), ‘Chhoti Si Baat’ (1975), ‘Chitchor’ (1976), ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977), ‘Swaami’ (1977), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Shaukeen’ (1982) etc. But in 1990s and thereafter, Basu Chatterjee seems to have lost his magic touch to his ‘middle of the road’ cinemas.

Today’s song is from a costume film ‘Raj Pratigya’ (1958).
This is yet another film, with a story of King and Queen. I have seen this film and have its story with me. Otherwise also, the film’s title and the cast are a clear giveaway enough to declare this film as a Raja-Rani film. The only difference is, this film’s story is based on the background of 2 warring kingdoms, Magadh and Malawa, which existed in olden times in India. After seeing such films, one gets the answer why and how the Mughals or the Europeans could win in India and managed to rule it despite the population being majority Hindus and the rulers in a disciplined minority. The majority was busy fighting among themselves rather than with the invaders jointly !

Shakespeare’s plays have been one of the important sources for adapting them in Hindi films since the beginning of the Indian film industry in 1913. However, since very few films produced and released during the silent film era survived, it is difficult to say how many silent films were based on Shakespeare’s plays. A research paper on Shakespeare on Screen by Dr. Joseph Koyippally has identified 8 silent films based on Shakespeare’s plays that were released between 1923-30.

Happy birthday to actor-writer-director, Honey Irani who completes 74 years today (17 January 2024). She shares her birth date with her ex-husband, Javed Akhtar who turns 79 today.
Honey Irani is the daughter of Noshir Irani who was one of the partners of Mumbai’s famous Irani Bakery and restaurant, B Merwan & Co. located opposite Grant Road railway station. (I used to visit this place almost every Saturdays to buy their famous maawa cake). Her mother, Perin Irani was fond of Hindi films and was firm that her children should work in films.
