Hullo Atuldom
Listening to music is a pastime. And if it is film songs – all the more good. Plus if it is HFM I couldn’t ask for more- anyone who knows me knows this. Fellow atulites included. Followers of the blog also are aware that “vividh bharati” the radio station, is my reminder diary.
So soon as I heard the program remembering Parveen Babi – of the lustrous hair- I looked for hitherto unposted songs and found many possibilities.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 15
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
And so, we do get to a song in Saigal Sb’s voice song in this series. Memory serving right, I would have preferred to start the series with this song. But oh well. Actually, we do have a Saigal Sb song earlier in this series. But that song – “Babul Mora, Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye”, is rerecorded in Jagjit Singh Chitra Singh voices.
Remembering the memorable singer KL Saigal Sb – it is 73 years today, since this Divine Voice departed from this mortal world. The singer has gone away, his voice, the sound captured in the songs recorded by him, are still alive.

Today’s song is from the first decade of the talkie era and from one of the very popular Saigal films coming from New Theatres, Calcutta, ‘President’ (1937).
Ardeshir Irani of Imperial Film Co. won the race with Calcutta’s Madon Theatres and released the first talkie film of India – ‘Alam Ara’ (1931) and a revolution took place in the Indian Film Industry ! With just one shot, scores of Anglo-Indian actresses of the silent era became jobless, because they could not speak Hindi or sing a song. Smaller producers of silent films just shut their shops, because now, a single talkie film needed 4 times more investment compared to cheaper varieties of silent films produced earlier. The financial wizards understood the new opportunity of making money by investing in talkie film production. The number of staff of film companies increased and the big players with sound finances, became ready to grow bigger.

Hullo Atuldom
Happy festival at the outset.
A festival that goes by various names :- Makara Sankranti (AP, Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra), Pongal (TN & Pondicherry), Lohri (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi), Sakraat & Makraat (Bihar, UP, Uttarakhand), Uttarayan (Gujarat, Diu, Daman), Suggi (in parts of Karnataka), Magh Saaji (HP), Ghughuti – (Kumaon), Makara Chaula (Odhisha), Kicheri (Poorvanchal, East UP), Pousha Sankranti (Bengal and North East), Magh Bihu (Assam), Shishur Sankraat (Kashmir ), etc etc. Outside of the country, in some neighbouring Asian countries to be exact, it is celebrated as Maaghe Sankrast – Nepal, Tirmoori – Sindh Pakistan, Songkran -Thailand , Pi Ms. Lao – Laos, Thingyan – Myanmar, Mohan Songkran – Cambodia etc. Basically we are all celebrating the transition of the Sun across the Equator, on it’s journey from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere.

Today’s song is a very rare song from an obscure and unheard of film – Anjaam-1940. Films with the title Anjaam were made in 1940, 1952, 1968, 1978, 1986 and 1993. Today’s film was the first and then in every decade one film was made on this title. First I thought that this title wins the highest number, but NO. The honour of ‘same title maximum films made’ goes to INSAAF, which was made 7 times !

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-20) – Song No. 1
——————————————————————————
Welcome all to this first post under the ‘Blog 10-Year Challenge’ in this year “2020”, where we will be going back to the movies represented on the blog in the year “2010”.
Today we begin our journey in this year with a not-so-popular but yet a nice hummable song from the movie ‘Aashiq Hoon Bahaaron Ka-1977’. I had planned the post in the month of December’2019 itself when I had browsed for the movies represented in the month of January’2010.

Hullo Atuldom
Today is the date when we think of our favourite innovator of the 70s and 80s. The songs he composed for his debut, in the 1961 released “Chhote Nawaab”, were of a different flavour from the music he created in his later years. Of course, I don’t need to mention that today is Pachamda a.k.a R D Burman’s remembrance day.
It is 26 years since his passing and we, his fans, still talk of him in present tense. We do not tire of describing his love for experimenting with sounds- using a glass and spoon or broom and comb to create the opening note of a song; or asking an artist to gargle warm water to provide a dramatic effect to a scene. Asha Bhonsle has often mentioned how she had to practice breathing to sing “piya tu ab toh aaja”.
