Today’s song is the last and final song from the film Sindbaad the Sailor aka Sindbad Jahazi-1952.

1952 was a year which was going through a lean period for Hindi films. Increased costs of Film production, escalating rates of stars and music Directors, establishment of Star System in place of earlier Studio System, increasing taxes, decreasing number of Cinema Halls etc caused a worry in the film industry. Financiers with Black money were making films – in 1952 the number of Hindi films made went up to 105 from 97 of 1951, but dropped again to 98 in 1953. Most films were of lower quality. Because of superior music there were some great films too, but the situation was grave nevertheless.

Today’s song is from the social film Parichay-1954.

Selection of an apt and fitting Title for the film, which makes a statement on the film’s content, has always been a daunting challenge to filmmakers. There are many film titles which are appropriate, but more titles are far off from the film’s content, misleading the viewers. Parichay-1954 is one such film. The film tries to glorify the sanctity of a marriage and how it should be carried on, but its title does not have any connection with this philosophy.

The film was produced by Radheshyam Jhunjhunwalla under his own banner, J.J.Films, Bombay. It was directed by an expert director- Satyen Bose. The music to the film’s 8 songs was shared by Sailesh Mukherjee and Vedpal Verma. The cast of the film was Shashikala, Abhi Bhattacharya, Pranoti Ghosh (wife of Abhi Bhattacharya in real life), Sajjan (Purohit), Zebunnisa (an actress from the silent era), Panchotia, Shakuntala, Indira Chitnis, Dhumal, Kesarbai (elder sister of actress Indira Wadkar and paternal aunt of actress Hansa Wadkar) and others. Songs were written by Keshav (5) and Akhtar Yusuf(2).

Today’s song is a 2-part Triade from the film Panghat-1943.

From their initial C grade stunt /costume films, Prakash Pictures of Vijay and Shankar Bhatt turned to Mythological films after the mammoth success of Bharat Milap-1942 and occasionally made a few social films too. In the end Prakash made exclusively social films only till closing down the studio in 1971. In their busy times in the first half of the 1940s, they made today’s film as a quicky. The entire film was shot in 45 days. This was possible as they had taken mostly B grade artists who had plenty of free time for shootings.

Film Panghat-1943 was directed by K.J.Parmar and Mahesh Chander- both Cinematographers with Prakash Pictures. The music was by S.N.Tripathi, favourite of Prakash Pictures. The Lyricists were Pt. Indra and Ramesh Gupta. The cast included Ratnamala, Umakant, Susheel Kumar, Alaknanda, Jeevan, Leela pawar, Rajkumari Shukla, Baby Tara and many others.

Today’s song is a complete turn around for my style of writing on old films and music. It is like something “out of syllabus” for me ! Today’s song is from the film Chameli ki shaadi-1986. Usually, I restrict my choices between 30s to the 60s films. But there are some films made after 1970 ( and even some after 2000) which I liked very much. Chameli ki shaadi-1986 is one such film.

Actually I saw my last Hindi film in a theatre somewhere in the year 1975-76. After that I have not visited any Theatre. I have not seen any Multiplex from inside anytime. It does not mean that I stopped seeing films. In the 80s and 90s I saw films on my VCR and later on, on Television. As my age advanced, my patience receded and it was impossible for me to sit before a TV set for 4 hours to watch a movie of 2 1/2 hours and advertisements of 1 1/2 hours. In any case after the year 2000 the kind of films made were certainly not to my taste and I stopped seeing films completely, with some exceptions.
