Today’s song is from a rare and less known film ‘Lakharani’ from 1945.
Although this was a film made by the great Prabhat Film Company of Poona, unlike earlier Prabhat films this movie never became famous or a landmark film. The reasons were many. The main reason was that it was was made in the period when the company had become very weak after V Shantaram left Prabhat Studios along with some of his chosen people from various departments. Secondly, the storyline of this film was far away from the type of films Prabhat had made in the past. True to its tradition, however, the film had a central theme of “open entry for all castes into Hindu temples“. But it was told through a story of tribal folks and allied jungle people, with whom probably, the audience could not identify themselves.

After an enforced hiatus of over a month, I am back again with yet another song from the yore.
During this period, I acutely realised how much this Blog, its people, Hindi old films and songs had become a part of my life and I missed all this. When I was younger and ran after my career, the same feeling used to be there. Now of course, there are deadlines, commitments, accountability and work satisfaction, but of different kind. Equally important, nevertheless. I was overwhelmed with the good wishes and prayers for me from friends during this period. God is Great and everything fitted in place finally and I am once again ready to pour my heart here in discussing songs, people and films. Thanks to all.

Toady’s song is from film ‘Achhoot’ (1940),sung by composer Gyan Dutt and singer actress Vasanti.
The second world war started from 1939, but its effects started being felt in India after 1940 only. The Government became alert and sensitive. Lots of restrictions were put on Imports and Exports. All exports to Germany and Japan were banned. Foreign travel came under Government microscope. Imports were restricted to only essential goods. Raw film stock came under Government control (and naturally became available freely in black market at exorbitant price). Taking advantage of the situation, Government declared that those film production houses who help Government in its war efforts, by making films with pro Govt. themes, would get raw film on priority.

Today’s song is from a very little known film ‘Nirmal’ from 1952. During the period of the 50s, the film industries in all centres, i.e. Calcutta, Madras and Bombay were in full steam. The Partition had made a quantitative and qualitative change in the Hindi film industry. Many seasoned and successful artists had left India, creating a void suddenly. However, this proved to be an opportunity in disguise for many artists ‘waiting in the wings’ in the fields of acting, film direction and music direction. The void was filled up almost immediately.
