My Primary education was in Urdu language. Hyderabad being a Muslim state, learning Urdu had a definite advantage, but there were schools in English, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and even Hindi mediums as well in Hyderabad and the treatment to all other languages than Urdu was equal by the Nizam Government. This was because Hyderabad was a Trilingual state, consisting of 8 Telugu speaking Districts, 5 Marathi speaking Districts and 3 Kannada speaking districts, plus the rulers were Urdu speakers. From 5th standard I changed to Marathi Medium and continued till end of schooling. English, Marathi and Hindi were my favourite subjects, but Maths and Geography were my sworn enemies.

Film making had started in India in early 1900s and many enthusiastic lovers of making images were doing a lot of work in this field. By the time the First Talkie Film came in 1931, there were quite a few film producing centres engaged in making silent films, like Bombay, Calcutta, Lahore, Poona, Kolhapur, Bangalore, Madras, Hyderabad etc. However,Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta were the three main centres ones where the bulk of movies were was made. In those days, India was vertically divided into two parts-Calcutta on the Eastern part and Lahore and Bombay on the Western part for Hindi films. Writing about old films and old songs is not an easy job. Particularly,if you are writing about Debut Films and Debut songs,it is a Herculean task to find out which is the real Debut song/Film. This is because, as I always say, we are a poor nation as far as recording film history is concerned. There are conflicting claims made by Internet sites and so called experts. Even books are not reliable, as I found recently. Therefore, it is very difficult to verify any information.

TALAT MEHMOOD- ” God gave emotions to Human beings and to make him emotional, He sent Talat Mehmood ! ” so said a Music expert. And I agree with him. Talat, with his velvety voice and a God given “LARGISH” (a technical term for the tremor in his voice) regaled soft music lovers with his inimitable songs. he was not only incomparable but he was also Unique and I am sure there will not be another Talat in future.

I have been watching and enjoying films since last 65 years and like all other Senior Citizen,I too have developed love for old films, old songs, old times, old customs and old memories. But I have ensured that my love of these ‘oldies’ is not blind or of extremist view. I do not have inflexible opinions about old or new things. I do enjoy many new things which have made life more comfortable and enjoyable, like computers,Mobile phones or TV serials etc.
