The movie “Pyaar ka mausam” is a nice package of beautiful songs. It has less songs than other Nasir Hussain movies, but then all of them are good quality songs.

There are qawwali’s and than there are some qawwali’s. Or should I say there are qawwalis and than there are some filmi qawwalis by Roshan. To begin with I am not a very big fan or a knowledgeable person to talk about qawwali, hence this flippancy 😉 .

This song is from the Film Khaamoshi – The Musical. This is a comparatively new film for this blog. But since I like the songs of this film too much, I want to discuss this song first. The singer is Kavita Krishnamoorthy and the music director is the duo of Jatin-Lalit. Jatin-Lalit may not be the most original music directors of the 90’s but they brought a freshness to Hindi film music which had lost all appeal during the 80’s.

We all know that Madan Mohan left for his heavently abode during the making of this film “Laila Majnu”. The film released in 1976 and the music of this film was super hit and it is very popular to this day. The success that eluded him during his lifetime was only destined to be his after his death. I have been meaning to write down the lyrics of this films songs, as many of them are still to be discussed in this blog.

Here is another fun song from the film “Minister”. Two months ago the post another song “Aji Biwi ko ghar pe bitthla ke” from this film appeared in the blog. The song I am discussing now will be the third song from this film. This is a “telephone song” sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Music is by Madan Mohan and Lyricist is Rajendra Krishan. Unfortunately, I dont recognise the two actors who are lip synching this song. The song is funny enough, just like “mere piyaa gaye rangoon”. Bhagwaan Dada is seen only briefly during the song. Telephone songs have their own appeal as the the singers are required to be on the opposite ends of the line. But in this song, though it starts in a telephone booth and ends there too, the protagonists are singing it with each other and roaming around outdoors.

I dont know how it is that I am finding songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri again and again. The song which is under discussion is from the film “Ardhangini”. From the other songs posted here and seen on youtube it is seen that this film stars Meena Kumar and Raj Kumar, and from the title and songs I assume this to be similar type of social film like ‘Aarti”.

This song under discussion is from the film “Birha ki Raat”(1950). Another song I discussed from this film the other day “bahut purdard hai aye sunnewaale”” starts with the sh’er :

jahaan mein jin ki ummeedon ke bede
paar hote hain
woh khush qismat hazaaron mein kahin
do chaar hote hain

‘Beda paar lagaana’ is a saying in hindi/urdu meaning ‘achieving the ambition or reaching ones destination. The word ‘Beda’ literally means a “Fleet of big ships”. The opposite of this saying in a curse “Beda garq ho teraa” or a lament “beda garq hogayaa”. “Garq’ is drowning in water. The special thing about these sayings or muhaavra’s which are used in urdu/hindi, is that they can be used backwards, forwards, in singular/plural,past/present tense, negative/positive and in varied situation they can be applied.

While I searched for this song, Youtube had a number of audio links, no video links, and they all said only that this was a Rafi song from the film “Love in Canada”. The year is said to be 1979, but I am not too sure. When I heard the opening music of the song, I was convinced that it is an R D Burman song. Still to verify my hunch, I looked for info on earthmusic.net. But that website has no information of either this film or song. In this case even Google search engine was not of much help. Finally I remembered that there is a privately compiled list of all Rafi songs stored somewhere in my lap top. I found the excel format file and found the other details about this song. This is song no. 5337 in total 5373 songs rendered by Mohammed Rafi.

This movie “Birha ki Raat” (1950) had Dev Anand and Nargis playing lead roles, which is a rare occurance. Video links are not available on youtube for the songs of this film, so we make do with only the audio links. Only one song, a duet by Rafi-Lata is posted in the blog so far. When I heard this Rafi solo “bahut purdard hai ae sunnewaalon daastan meri” for the first time, it touched me. Then on second hearing I found it to be a very endearing ghazal.
