Today (19 september 2012) is the death anniversary of Datta Davjekar (15 november 1917-19 september 2007). He was a music director of Marathi and Hindi movies. He did not compose music for too many Hindi movies, but his name has gone in record books as the music director who gave Lata her first opportunity to record a solo song in a Hindi movie. The movie was “Aap Ki Sewa Mein” (1947). This song Paa laagoon kar joree re has already been discussed in great details in this blog.

One song from this film “Yahudi ki Beti” was posted in the blog by Sudhir Sir. This link to this particular song under discussion now has been with me for a long time. There is a lot of confusion in youtube and even earthmusic.net about the name of the music director of this film. Even the name of singer is also a confusion. This particular link that I have found is for Mohammed Rafi solo version. The clip itself is giving the name of music director as Hemant Kumar. Earthmusic mentions this song as sung by Lata Mangeshkar and also by Asha-Hemant Kumar.”The songs are confused and mixed up with “”Yehudi ki ladki”(1957). To add to the confusion, there was a film with similar name i.e. “Yahudi ki Ladki” in 1933 too.

Tu kaun hai mera keh de baalam

Here is this song from “Deedaar” (1951). It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on a lady looking extremely happy and besides herself with joy. I had great difficulty in identifying her and I actually rubbed my eyes in disbelief on realising that the lady in question was none other than Nimmi ! I was told that the only occasion when Nimmi was seen breaking into a faint smile was in a 1960s movie and that too towards the fag end of her career. but this song alters all that. She actually is seen smiling whole heartedly in this song.
