When one looks at the calender of Hindi movie music, one finds that almost every day of the year is important in one respect or the other. Today (31st march) for instance is the day when Meena Kumari expired exactly 40 years ago. I was a school kid at that time and we school kids, on hearing this news opined that “Paakeeza”, the much awaited movie of Meena Kumari would benefit from her death. And the judgement of us pre teen kids turned out to be accurate. 🙂 What Prophetic kids we were those days! 🙂

In fact the very purpose of ascertaining whether this song was in my VCD or not was a precursor to write an article on this song. But somehow I was carried away by the availability of the video clip of the Suman Kalyanpur song. So I sat down for deciphering the lyrics of ‘raat ki mehfil sooni sooni’ which was not a difficult task due to the clear audio and impeccable diction of Lata Mangeshkar.

It was in 1949 that Lata sang a song about “Laal dupatta”and that song, namely Hawa me udta jaaye(Barsaat) has become a much loved timeless classic.

Ten years later, Lata sang a song about “dhaani chunariya”. This song is extremely melodious and sweet, but this time the movie as well as the song failed to make ripples and by now this song has ended up as an obscure song.
