The non-film offerings of Saigal Saab are verily a much more valuable treasure than the film music rendered by him. Although comparatively much smaller, this treasure is much more inspiring and stimulating. Completely un-encumbered by the requirements of music direction, and playing to an audience, these non film offerings are a rare collection of exceptional quality and an expression of a free soul. This collection consists of 26 Urdu ghazals, and 11 bhajans and geets in Hindi. (Please note that these numbers do not include his songs in other languages i.e. Bengali, Tamil, Punjabi, and Persian). Majority of these are now posted on this blog. We are nearing the end of this list, and the postings of this series should conclude in another ten days or so.

Saigal Saab, a person, a name – who went beyond being a legend in his own lifetime. He was an institution, with no parallel in the entire heritage of Hindi film music, during the years that he actually graced the stage of the world, or in all the years since. Having entered the cine world almost with the inception of talkies, as the stream of film music was still trying to find its feet, groping in the dark, he took this music to unprecedented heights, and left behind a benchmark that has not been equaled since he departed.

Praying to the Almighty to take care of one’s problems is an old practice in Hindi movies dating back to 1940s. Which was the first movie where a lady was shown singing a prayer in front of a God’s idol in Hindi movies ? Perhaps the knowledgeable readers may have some idea.

What kinds of songs does one expect in a movie titled “Truck Driver” ? From the title, one would expect the movie to be a B grade movie and the songs to be of chaalu variety. As it turns out, the movie is indeed a B grade movie which I was not even aware of. This is a 1970 movie and it had Dev Kumar and Indrani Mukherji in lead roles.

Saanwariya Oye Baansuriya Oye Bajaaye Gayo Re

This song from “Subhadra” (1946) is extremely rare. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Pt Indra is the lyricist and music is composed by Vasant Desai.
The song is picturised on Lata herself. Yes, “Subhadra” (1946) is one of the rare movies where Lata acted and sang for herself. We all would have dearly loved to watch a song picturised on Lata herself.
The song itself is wonderful to listen to. I have no idea why this song is this rare. This song should have been among the lst of most well known Lata songs.
Here is this superb song from “Subhadra” (1946) for the listening pleasure of music lovers.

Maiyya mori main nahin maakhan khaayo

Most Hindi movie songs have been written by lyricists who were around at the time when these songs were composed. But there are some cases where the lyricists lived in an earlier era and they were dead and buried/cremated long before their creations were used in Hindi movie songs. For instance, Hindi movies have used songs written by Ghalib,Meera bai etc who lived in the 19th century and 15th century respectively. In fact, in one case, an Hindi movie has used a poetry of an English poet who lived in the 19th century.

Sar pe kadamb ki chhainyya muraliyaa baaj rahi

When I listened to “Puraani Filmon Ke Geet” programme of Radio Ceylon in 1970s between 7-30 AM to 8 AM, the last song of the programme was reserved for K L Saigal. Now that I think about it, there were a few standard K L Saigal songs that were recycled repeatedly in this programme. I have a feeling that all the K L Saigal songs that were played in that programme have been covered in this blog. I am now in fact covering those K L Saigal songs that are lesser known and which were rarely played in the above mentioned programme .
