Today’s song is a duet from the film Shrikrishna Bhakti-1955.
This was a Mythological film (पौराणिक ), directed by the “Trick Magician” – Babubhai Mistri. The music director was the Melody Maker – Chitragupta. The cast of the film was Manmohan Krishna, Lalita Pawar, Mahipal, Bipin Gupta, B.M.Vyas, Dalpat and many others. A special feature of this film was that there were as many as 7 “Guest Appearance ” artistes – clearly a record number for any film till then. I doubt very much if any other film has broken this record. Any reader, who knows about more than 7 Guest artistes in a film, mentioned in the HFGK, so far, may please give the information in the Comments column. The Guest artistes in this film were….Krishna Kumari, Anwar Hussain, Maruti, Shaikh, Indira bansal, Bagala and Chitalkar (surprised with this name !).

This famous dialogue in the film, ‘Devdas’ (1955) was written by Rajinder Singh Bedi, the Urdu short stories writer, playwright and the novelist. In the aftermath of the partition, he had landed in Hindi film industry mainly for the betterment of his financial conditions apart from creative contributions to the extent possible. But once he knew the realities that the film writers have no much freedom, Rajendra Singh Bedi turned producer-director in Hindi films to fulfil his creative desire.

Their chemistry clicked from the very first film together which seems to have been liked by the audience as per the box office indicator. ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ (2017) is their second film together. Other supporting cast included Seema Bhargav, Neeraj Sood, Chittaranjan Tripathy, Brijendra Kala, Supriya Shukla, Sanjay Singh etc.

Today’s song is from the film Garib-1942.
This film was made by the National studios, which was formed after Sagar movietone was closed down. Because of this the artiste who were contracted with Sagar were now bound with National Studios. Music Director Anil Biswas, actor Surendra, Sankatha prasad, Ramchandra Thakur and few others who worked for this film were ‘carried forward’ from Sagar Movietone. Most of them freed themselves to work for other studios or became Free lancers. But Music Director Anil Biswas, while in contract withNational studios, gave music to a film ” Basant ”, made by Bombay Talkies and the name of his brother in law, Pannalal Ghosh was used as the MD of that film. After the closure of national studios, Anil Biswas openly joined Bombay Talkies leaving all his loyal friends of Sagar Movietone, jobless. This became the cause of a rift between once close friends Mehboob Khan and him as Khan never pardoned Anil Biswas for this selfish act. (ref…book “Mehboob Khan” by Shashikant Kinikar).
