Today’s song is from the film ‘Shikar’ (1955).
Films with the title ‘Shikar’ were made in 1955, 1965, 1999 and 2001. Then there were films called ‘Shikari’, made in 1932, 1946, 1963 and 1991. To top it all, there was a film with the title ‘Shikar Shikari Ka’ made in 2010. I am not giving these details for fun, but after you read this film’s story, you will yourself say that the title of this film should have been ‘Shikar Shikari Ki’ !

Happy birthday to actor-writer-director, Honey Irani who completes 74 years today (17 January 2024). She shares her birth date with her ex-husband, Javed Akhtar who turns 79 today.
Honey Irani is the daughter of Noshir Irani who was one of the partners of Mumbai’s famous Irani Bakery and restaurant, B Merwan & Co. located opposite Grant Road railway station. (I used to visit this place almost every Saturdays to buy their famous maawa cake). Her mother, Perin Irani was fond of Hindi films and was firm that her children should work in films.

Today’s song is a duet from the film ‘Rocket Girl’ (1962).
Man has always been curious about other planets and the other worlds. His attempts to know more about them have been known since the Vedic Times, i.e. about 5000 years ago. Our religious books describe the various celestial bodies and there are many stories told about them. However, the modern human quest, in reality, started first when during the II World War, Germany developed a rocket to carry missiles over a long distance. The Germans called it the V2 rocket. From this was developed the first ever rocket which went into space for a short period in 1942.

As per Hindu mythology, the Sun god is travelling in the sky on a chariot pulled by seven horses. After pulling the chariot for a long time, the six horses are tired. It is the seventh horse who remains and continues to pull the chariot signifying it to be the horse of dreams and aspirations for the future. In 1952, Dr Dharamvir Bharati published his novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’. I read the novella in full which is available online. The novella is written in narration style in which the protagonist, Manik Mulla narrates to his three friends, three separate romance stories relating to three girls. What is of interest is that Manik Mulla is not only the narrator of the stories, but he is also the characters in all the three stories who loves these three girls at different points of time in his life. As Agyeya said in his foreword to the novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’ is not the one story comprising three stories, but three stories constituting one story. The author, in his introduction, has revealed that during his early period of writing, he was influenced by Marxist objectives rather than hardcore Marxism. It really has been a while– I do not follow the current Hindi films scene on a regular basis. I think this started in mid 1980s. One factor was that my life became quite mobile as far as my work situation was concerned. Moving to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1987, then on to US in 1988, back in Delhi 1996, change of workplace two times, and then back again in the US in 2000. Back in Delhi 2009/10, and then more ongoing travel albeit shorter and less frequent.

During our childhood, when we were in school, we were fond of different stories. Our school books contained interesting stories of kings, explorers and great souls. In those days most children used to read outside school books. Some kids were lucky whose grandparents told them stories from mythology and history. This not only gave entertainment but also helped build up good values of life. Some children liked mythology stories, some liked historical and yet some others liked adventure stories. The joint family culture helped develop the right kind of mindset and value addition.

Ah yes, long gap. My intention has been to make this series a weekly affair. But then – ‘man proposes, everybody else disposes’ keeps happening with me. 😀 . And so, intentions aside, this series has been a victim of my preoccupations / laziness / lack of creativity – howsoever I may say it. But of course, no excuses are relevant.
