“Jai Santoshi Maa”(1975) was one of two movies that were released on 15 August 1975. “Sholay”(movie 1975) was the other movie. In the earlier weeks, “Sholay”(1975) was receiving lukewarm response from audience, and their makers were very nervous. After a few days of anxiety, the crowd suddenly began to rust into the movie halls screening “Sholay”(1975), much to the relief of their makers.

Hullo Atuldom
2nd June 1988. 33 years ago, Raj Kapoor who was also called the greatest Showman, bid adieu to this mortal world.
He was first an actor who turned a filmmaker early in his career. It is said that he had done roles as a child actor in the late ’30s, but his first adult role happened in 1947 in ‘Neel Kamal’ with Madubala as his heroine. Within a year he turned a producer-director, set up the RK Banner and came up with “Aag” and went on to produce and direct nine more movies – the last of which was “Ram Teri Ganga Maili”. Additionally he produced ‘Biwi-o-biwi’, ‘Dharam Karam’, ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal’, ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hain’, ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’, ‘Jaagte Raho’, Boot Polish’, ‘Aah’ i.e. the total output of RK banner during Raj Kapoor’s lifetime was 18. His sons Randhir- Rishi- Rajeev tried to keep the legacy of the banner alive and made a few more movies.

It was the first Carribean (West Indian) colour movie, produced in Trinidad and Tobago, a country with large population of Indian origin emigrants who left India and settled in that as well as neighbouring countries (such as Guyana, Suriname etc) a few centuries ago. Many West Indian Cricketers with Indian sounding names are descendents of those Indian origin people. Names like Sonny Ramadhin, Rohan Kanhai, Alvin Kalicharan, Shivnaraine Chanderpal, Ravi Rampal, Darren Ganga, Ramnaresh Sarwan are familiar to cricket lovers.

I remember, when I was a growing child, I used to hear the name of film personality called ‘Sajjan’ by elders at home, or likeminded cine-goers who were family friends of my parents.
I used to wonder who exactly this person was in the movies I was watching. It continued for many years and all this while I had no clue about this person.
When I was a grown-up boy (😉) and was studying in 11-12th standard I watched ‘Johny Mera Naam-1970’ in 1983-85. And here for the first time I get to know who exactly the actor named ‘Sajjan’ was. After that whichever movies new and older I watched I enjoyed his performance on screen. In the background his image of a good character actor (that build up in my mind from the discussions at home) was always there in my mind. So, I was also enjoying his negative roles in many black & white movies of fifties and sixties.

Imagine, a tall and lanky young man from India, trained to be a wrestler, and a state level sportsman from Bengal, appearing in the Indian contingent at the Olympics in 1936 / 1940 / 1944. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the Olympics of 1940 and 1944 were cancelled due to the ongoing World War II. Had there been peace in the world during those years, maybe the course of history of the Hindi film music may have been different.
Well OK, the previous paragraph is quite speculative. But yes, the fact is that in his younger years, PC Dey was much more inclined towards body building and wrestling. Trained by one Gorobabu, a pehalwan of repute in Bengal, he represented his institution, Vidyasagar College of Calcutta (now Kolkata) at the state level championships and reached the finals in his category. Never mind that his uncle, the renowned KC Dey, would continue to press him to take his music training more seriously. But that was not to be so. Well, for some time at least.
