When the going gets completely traditional and classical, then the music directors always turn to that voice, which simply never ceases to amaze with its range and its control over the notes and the ragas. It is the voice of Manna Dey, the last of the old school classical singers, with a firm grounding in the traditional art form of music of the sub continent. A singer whose voice is the natural resting place for such classical icons as “Bhay Bhanjanaa Vandanaa Sun Hamaari”, “Laaga Chunri Mein Daag”, “Sur Na Saje Kya Gaaun Main”, “Kaun Aaya Mere Mann Ke Dwaare”, “Poochho Na Kaise Main Ne Rain Bitaai”, “Tere Naina Talaash Karen Jise”, “Aayo Kahaan Se Ghanshyam”, “Udd Jaa Bhanwar”, “Chali Raadhe Raani Akhiyon Mein Paani”, “Banaawo Batiyaan Haaye Kaahe Ko Jhoothi”, “Tu Chhupi Hai Kahaan” – and many more such fabulous classical creations.

The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Premnath, Mehmood, Ashok Kumar, Sujit Kumar, Asrani, Aruna Irani, Nirupa Roy, Madan Puri, Kumari Naaz, Piloo.J.Wadia, Dulari, Ram Mohan, Chaman Puri, Junior Mehmood, Kamal deep, Sadhu Singh, Kuljeet, James Bond, Rirkoo, Kamal, C.L.Shah etc. Then this movie also had Helen, Chitra, Gulshan Bawra, Tuntun and Birbal in guest appearances.

“Amaanat” (1975) was produced and directed by Shatrujit Paul. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Sadhana, Balraj Sahni, Mehmood, Achala Sachdev, Shashikala, Keshto Mukherji etc in it. This movie began in 1960s and its songs got released much before the movie. The movie itself had a very delayed release. It finally got its censor certificate on 31 december 1975 and thus qualified as a movie of 1975!

Dil Ki Raahein (1973) was produced by Majjeda Movies and directed by B R Ishara. The star cast included Rakesh Pandey, Rehana Sultan, Sulochana, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Amrit Pal etc. Naqsh Llayalpuri provided the lyrics and the music was by Madan Mohan. The music of this film did not impress the masses and it was one of the least popular music amongst Madan Mohan’s films. However, one Lata’s song ‘Rasm-e-Ulfat Ko Nibhaayen’ became a collector’s item amongst Madan Mohan’s fans.

Very recently Atul-ji posted a classical song by Ustad Ameer Khan from Baiju Bawara. He has wonderfully written about the minority of film music listeners, who likes and could appreciate classical music.(I wish I had a small portion of his ability to put forward the ideas like him.) Being in that minority, I am thankful again to Atul-ji to post my classically based offerings, without my asking or making a stir for a quota of reservation for such minorities.

‘Sau Saal Baad’ of 1966 was an unsuccessful ghostly mystery film, produced by B K Dubey. The star cast included Feroz Khan, Kumkum, Manmohan Krishna, Rajendra Nath, D K Sapru etc. Lyrics were by Aanand Bakshi and the superb music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The music duo, with good knowledge of classical music composed this RaagaMaala, one of the best to be composed in Hindi Films. Singers Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar were unmatched as they always were, whenever singing of classical songs in HFM was concerned. Anand Bakshi provided beautiful typical traditional type of lyrics for those four compositions in Raagas Dhanya Dhaivat (a rare Raaga), Abhogi, Megh Malhar and Basant Bahar. The impressive violin piece after the first part, was played by Pt. Husnalal, who gave hit music in many Hindi films of Forties and Fifties with his brother, a team well-known as Husnalal-Bhagatram.
