“Seeta Aur Geeta”(1972) was released when I was at my most impressionable movie watching stage, though my elders did not share my enthusiasm and believed that kids needed to be shielded from movie watching for their own good. The music of “Seeta Aur Geeta”(1972) was so good that I was dying to watch this movie. My desperate prayers worked and I found myself being taken to the movie hall that was screening this movie. That movie hall was a newly built movie hall (called Sandhya Cinema) and “Seeta Aur Geeta” (1972) in fact was the very first movie that was screened in this hall.

Three Hindi films of the 50s which had created lots of hype during their pre-released days were ‘Aan’ (1952), ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ (1955) and ‘Navrang’ (1959). They were all made in Technicolor. With nearly all the films made during that time and earlier in black and white, there was curiosity among film buffs to watch these Technicolor films. While none of these films had good story lines, they all ran in the theaters for a long time. I remember ‘Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje’ (1955) had completed 100 weeks of run in Metro theater and ‘Navrang’ (1959) ran for over 50 weeks in Liberty theater of Mumbai.

The second song in the series ” VINTAGE KISHORE” is from a less known film Andolan-1951. It is likely that most people have not even heard the name of this film. It was produced by Harnam Motwani, under the banner of his own Motwani Ltd. Bombay. Pannalal Ghosh was the Music Director and the songs were written by Indeevar, Niyaz Hyder and Bankim Chandra chatterjee. The cast of the film was Kishore Kumar, Shivraj, Manju, Pushpa, Parshuram, Tiwari, Shekhar, Krishnakant etc. There were only 5 songs in it but 8 playback singers were used.

Two days back on the occasion of Yusuf Khan’s (Dilip Kumar to all of us) Atul had said and I quote
“when I decided to find Dilip Kumar songs to discuss, I realised that almost all the Dilip Kumar movies have already been painted orange, viz all the songs of these movies have already been discussed in the past. There are a few Dilip Kumar movies where a few songs are not yet discussed, but these songs are picturised on actors other than Dilip Kumar.”
