Today (1 may 2013) is the 94th birth anniversary of Manna Dey. Radio/ TV stations, sites etc must be celebrating this occasion with some of his songs. It is easy for most of them. All they have to do is discuss some of the well known Manna Dey songs from movies like “Zanjeer”, “Upkaar”, “Dil Hi To Hai”, “Anand”, “Mera Naam Joker” etc and that is all. The same well known songs can be used on other similar occasions as well.

“Aankh Ki Sharam” (1943) is quite an obscure movie by any standards. The little information that is available on internet suggests that the movie was directed by Balwant Bhatt and that the movie had Prithviraj Kapoor, Kaushalya, Agha, Trilok Kapoor, Moti, Gulab, Himalaya, Nalini Gupta etc in it.

And so it is, given that the lyrics are coming from the pen of Majrooh Sb and the music is created by Khayyaam Sb, the genius of the understated melody who has remained always by the banks of the mainstream. Whatever may be the film, his creations are simply fantastic.
