“Begunaah” (1957) was a movie whose story was plagiarised from an American movie namely “Knock on Wood” (1954). Plagiarisation from foreign movies have been going on from olden days and filmakers indulge in it with impunity even today. It would seem that “Begunaah” (1957) was the only movie which has even been penalised for this act. When Paramount Pictures, the makers of “Knock on Wood” (1954) came to know about the fact that “Begunaah” (1957) was copied from their movie, they look legal action in a Bombay court. Much to the astonishment of Indian movie fraternity and legal circles, the Indian court ordered the destruction of all copies of “Begunaah” (1957). The movie, which was already released, had to be withdrawn from movie halls and the prints were destroyed. all this happened quite swiftly. The court gave its decision within six weeks of filint the case and the prints were destroyed in another three months time.

“Aakraman” (1975) was a title that came as a surprise to me. Those were the days when Hindi movies did not have titles in Textbook Hindi. “Aakraman” is Hindi/ Sanskrit for “Attack”. The tendency for movie makers those days was the use a word like “Hamla” instead of “Aakraman”, even though it was a word of normal usage in Hindi textbooks. That way one needs to give some credit to the makers of this movie that he used a Hindi title for a Hindi movie.

“Chacha Zindabad” (1959) was a Light and Shade production. It was directed by Om Prakash. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Anita Guha, Jagirdar, Anoop Kumar, Raj Mehra, Manorama, Tuntun, Sunder, Bhagwan, Om Prakash etc in it.

The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Helen, Badri Prasad, Zeb Rehman, Iftekhar, Naaz, Anjali Kadam, Nazir Hussain, Nadira, Kamal Kapoor, Jeevan, Sulochana, Narendranath, Pinchoo Kapoor etc in it.

Today (23 august) is the birthday of Sapan Chakraborty. For much of his career, he was as assistant of R D Burman. He worked as an independent music director in a few Hindi and Bangla movies too. Moreover he has sung a few songs in Hindi movies too.

When ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ was released in 1959, the only thing I remembered at that time about the movie was that it was a film in which Asha Parekh was introduced as a new heroine to pair with Shammi Kapoor. The film was a super hit and its songs became very popular. But little did I know at that time that the film’s songs were composed by a new music director called Usha Khanna. In fact, I carried a wrong impression for some time that O P Nayyar was the music director of this film. Even for her second film ‘ Hum Hindustani’ which was released in 1960, I thought that the music director was Dattaram, the music assistant to Shankar-Jaikishan. I carried these impressions as the music compositions of these two films were very close to the styles of O P Nayyar and Shankar Jaikishan respectively. After about 4 decades when I revisited her songs, mostly of 60s and 70s, I felt that she had developed her own style of music for the songs of her later films.
