Good intentions are always the undoing. I am sure you would have also experienced this. मेरे साथ तो ये बहुत होता है. Take the case of this series itself. The second song is being posted today. When I initiated this series on 30th September with the song “Nigaahon Se Chhup Kar Kahaan Jaaiyega”, I had all the intentions to post one song at least every other day if not every day. The available list of songs is all identified. And see, it is the 11th day now that the second post is coming on. क्या कहना है good intentions का.

Mukesh and his Composers – 7

Boarding a ST bus in a depot is quite an exercise and we all may have not-so-fond memories of such pursuits. It’s a herculean task involving strength, luck and technique with which you push through the door entrance to get in. Peak hours pose tougher challenge with dozens trying to enter the rather narrow entrance of the bus at the same time. On some occasions a comic situation arises when two people get struck at the door entrance when the sum total of their waistlines is slightly more than the entrance width. For a moment (which to others behind seems like several minutes) there is some sort of air-lock or more appropriately a waistline-lock.

Today’s song is perhaps the first ever song of S D Batish that I am discussing here. Not that I avoided his songs or his songs were not good enough for me, but may be all his popular songs were already discussed here by others and I just did not get any of his songs for my purpose. It is purely a coincidence. Actually, I have lot of respect for S D Batish, who did a marvellous job of promoting Indian Music in UK and USA. He is one of the rare people who left the film world, but continued serving the Music by turning a corner in his life.

Today (5 august 2015)is the birthday of Kajol.
And I find myself writing a post on this blog for this occasion. 🙂
Of all the songs I’ve written about here, this has got to be the most recent. Most of the songs I post are from the 70s or earlier, with just the odd 1980s song.
And this one is of the 1990s.
But I want to post this for three reasons.

Mukesh and his Composers – 5
————————————
Remembering Mukesh (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976) today (22 july 2015)on his 92nd birth anniversary.
The year 1958 was a turning point in the singing career of Mukesh. Though he had started his career nearly two decades back in 1940 and had some remarkable hits in late 40’s and early 50’s, his foray into acting-singing in the early fifties had some disastrous consequences which in my view affected his whole career in some way or the other. The first three posts in this series clearly show that his songs with those composers stopped sometime after 1949-50. And then there are huge gaps before he was called again by the same composers.

Today (19 july 2015) is the seventh birth anniversary of this blog. It was started on this day in 2008.
As mentioned in earlier posts today, there was no celebration in the blog when it turned one year old. We began to celebrate the anniversaries from subsequent years. The sixth year celebration, viz the celebration last year in july 2015 was on a grand and ambitious scale. It on on that occasion that the blog touched the magical mark of TEN THOUSAND songs.

Mukesh and his Composers – 1
———————————
Naushad, Madan Mohan and SD Burman were some of the many music directors who composed songs for Mukesh. So why am I singling out these three great composers only? Read on.
I personally like to club these composers in one category as they have Mukesh songs in their initial films, but later on had huge gaps in terms of years before they accommodated him again albeit for a few songs. I would like to write three short posts on each of the combos.

R D Burman composed over 1700 songs in Hindi movies. Only 19 of these songs had the voice of Mukesh in them.
When I came across this figure yesterday (it is mentioned in the book -R D Burman- the man the music), I looked in the blog and also searched the list of R D Burman songs in HFGK.

I have been doing some research on the works of Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ – both as a poet and a lyricist for Hindi films. Being an admirer of this great poet and lyricist, I have been reading his poems that are available on the websites and also going through the available songs that he wrote for Hindi films. Suffice it to say here that he wrote over 100 songs for about 40 films during his stint in Hindi film industry. After 1975, The rate of his song writing for films had dwindled considerably since 1975, when he began to work from his home in Aligarh. The last time that he wrote a song for a film was for his close friend Dev Anand’s ‘Charge Sheet’ (2011).
