In July 2014, when the Blog was celebrating a milestone of 10,000 songs, I had written an article on Mallika Pukhraj and discussed her iconic nazm Abhi To Main Jawaan Hoon. At that time, I had heard almost all ghazals, nazms and thumris rendered by her and available on the websites. One of her ghazals which I liked for very unique style of rendition was “Dillagi Meri Koi Kya Jaane”. Surprisingly, a good quality video of her rendition of this ghazal was available on YT. I was under the impression that Mallika Pukhraj sang this ghazal in Wadia Movietone’s film ‘Kahaan Hai Manzil Teri’ (1939). I liked her rendition so much that I decided that I would attempt an article on this ghazal for the blog some time later. However, after a couple of months or so, I found to my dismay that the said video of the ghazal was deleted from YT.

“Bhai Bahan” seemed to be a popular title for a Hindi movie in the distant past. No less than three movies of this title were released in 1950, 1959 and 1969 respectively, at approximately 10 years interval. Songs from all these three movies have been discussed in the blog.

Today (6 january) is the birthday of Rameshwari. Rameshwari who ? Many people among younger generation may look askance on the mention of her name. But there was a time during 1977-78 when she was one of the hottest property in Hindi movies when she made her debut in Rajshree Production’s endearing movie “Dulhan wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1977). This movie turned her into an overnight sensation. People (especially women) would throng to watch this movie. When this movie was released in my town, I did not take any notice of it because the title of the movie did not appeal to me and in any case I was more into watching Amitabh Bachchan movies those days. But when I noticed that this movie was having a longer run in the town that what even “Sholay” (1975) managed, then I was intrigued and I bunked my college to watch this movie. And I was bowled over ! I then watched this movie four more times, and it was only for Rameshwari.

Genius of Jaidev – 20
================
Radio Ceylon gave me a jolt early today morning, to remind me of Jaidev ji’s ‘Punya-Tithi’. How could I, a diehard fan of Jaidev ji’s (rather an air conditioner) fail to present his song on our Blog, on this day, in my series ‘Genius of Jaidev? I have many of his songs partially ready for posting, so I selected this one and hurriedly gave finishing touches for presentation.

Today (21 september 2014) is the 88th birth anniversary of Noorjahaan (21 september 1926-23 december 2000). It is an event that may have gone largely unnoticed in Indian media (I am not sure because I do not watch news on TV. Going by the faceboook groups that I frequent, only one site recalled this event. It was through that site that I came to know of this date being the birth anniversary of Mallika e Tarannum.

This article is the 9800th song post in the blog.
It is with mixed emotions that I write this post.
No, it’s not quite what you’re thinking. Usually “mixed emotions” involve an element of happiness, tempered with sadness. Like parents sending their son or daughter abroad for higher studies. On one hand, they’re happy for their child’s future, on the other there’s an element of sadness that they will be separated by a considerable amount of distance and time.
