Under this series today we have this beautiful ‘Sufi Qawwali’ composed by C.Arjun and which is written by none other than Sahir Ludhianvi for the movie ‘Nawaab Sahib-1978’. I have vague memories of watching this movie in late seventies or early eighties, but I do not remember much about this movie or its story line. The only memory of this movie that I had carried over in my growing years and thereafter was this song ‘Hum Mein Hai Kya Ke Hamen Koi Haseena Chaahe’ sung by Mohd Rafi.

Many of the music directors of the the Golden era and the pre- golden era were competent singers as well. They sang mostly in their own films, but sometimes they also sang under the batons of other music directors. Today’s song, a qawwaali from “Samrat”(1954), is one such song, where C Ramchandra sings for Hemant Kumar. Rafi and chorus accompany C Ramchandra in this song.

There is one genre of songs that always has me hooked to it. And that is the qawwali.
I don’t know what exactly it is about the qawwali that has me so – I don’t think it is just one thing. Not just the music, or the lyrics, or the synchronized “clapping”, or the setting – I think it is all of these. The entire package, that fascinates me.
