Missing Films of 1960s – 95
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
We come to a very interesting episode of this series. The film I pick for today is ‘Koi Ghulam Nahin’ from 1970. The Geet Kosh listings say that the film has 6 songs, and all of them have been released on 78 rpm gramophone records. As I checked my own collection, I find that all the six songs are available. Just to check, I also went online and discovered that two songs are available on the YouTube. And very interestingly, one of them turns out to be a video. And a very interesting video at that. The song is sung by Rafi Sb, and is performed on screen by MG Ramachandran (MGR), the super star of South Indian cinema.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 08
—————————————————
While I was writing the previous post of this series few days ago, I was maybe suffering from lack of motivation. So I could not be very expressive and just tried to put together some random thoughts and to start the series again.
Today I am glad that somehow this series has begun again. Simply because I have spent this week in sharing with all those around me with some musical sense, a link I found on YouTube. Sharing it because that is the only thing I could do short of shouting on rooftops that look what I have found.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 07
—————————————————
I remember during the radio days, whenever a non filmy song programme would start, we would shut down the radio. Now it was time to play or to do some study seriously or even watch TV. The time for all of these things was limited. Entertainment was available only on its time with fixed hours and no more, because even if we were free the friends will be called home and play time was over. Time spend with friends in the colony playing or just doing gup-shup was precious.

Today’s song is from the musical blockbuster of the 1950s, Suvarna Sundari-58.
There was a love affair going on between the South films and Bombay Film industry during the 50’s decade. Right from film Chandralekha-48, South started pushing into Hindi domain with Remakes and Dubbed southern films. Some films were even made only in Hindi. As the years went by and the southern film market expanded greater than even Bombay, south had no time or need or interest in tapping the Hindi belt anymore.
