Majrooh Sulatanpuri’s filmy career as a lyricist started with ‘Shah Jehan’ (1946) under the music direction of Naushad. In the same year, he also wrote lyrics for ‘Keemat’ (1946) for which Naushad was the music director. It was only after the success of ‘Andaz’ (1949) that Majrooh Sultanpuri got his foothold in Hindi film industry. Unfortunately, this success was short lived as he was arrested in 1949 for his anti-establishment poems. He was given an option of either to apologise or face two years of prison. He opted for the later. At the time of his arrest, he was writing lyrics for the film ‘Aarzoo’ (1950) and it was his first collaboration with the music director Anil Biswas. This film also became a hit and all the songs including the iconic song ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal became very popular.

Prem karat bann mein

The first Hindi Tarzan movie was “Toofaani Tarzan” (1937). In this movie John Cawas played Tarzan and Jane was played by Gulshan. This movie was a Wadia Movietone production. It was directed by Homi Wadia. Other important actors in the movie were Boman Shroff, Chandrashekhar, Nazira, Dalpat, Ahmed Dilwar etc.

The last time I heard radio on a regular basis was in early 1980s, viz more than three decades ago. I continued to listen to radio for some more time during 1980s but only sporadically and things were never really the same again as far as radio listening was concerned.

“Neeli” (1950) was a Ranjit Film Company production. It was directed by Ratibhai Punatkar. The movie had Dev Anand, Suraiya, Agha, Shyama, Dulari, Cuckoo etc in it.

“Gunsundari” (1948), by now a forgotten movie, was an Ajit pictures production. It was directed by Ratibhai Punatkar. The movie had Saraswati, Manhar Desai, Nirupa Roy, Dulari, Chhagan, Romeo, Babu Raje, Jal Writer etc in it.

“Raahi” (1953) was a Naya Sansaar Production movie. It was directted by K A Abbas. The movie had Dev Anand, Nalini Jaiwant, Habib Tanvir, Balraj Sahni, K. Sethi, Manmohan Krishnan, Achla Sachdev, S. Michael, Rasheed, Shaukat Hashmi, David Abraham etc in it.

हाँ भई, होली हो और गीतों में रंग न हो तो, तो क्या मज़ा है, हाँ?
बस, भला हो उस ऊपर से ideas देने वाले का। गाने में एक से ज़्यादा आवाज़ हो तो पंक्तियों को color code कर दो। और फिर देखो गीत की लाईनें पढ़ने का मज़ा। और होली के दिन तो बस मज़ा रंगदार गीतों का ही है। सो, पेश है एक ऐसा ही रंगदार पंक्तियों वाला गीत – होली भी और रंग भी, दोनों ही गीत में गुथे हुये मिल गए।

“Shaadi” (1941) is by now a forgotten movie. This movie was produced by Jayant Desai for Ranjit Films. It had Khurshid, Ishwarlal, Madhuri, Motilal, Ghori etc in it.

Aaj hai holi aaj deewaali

Today (27 march 2013) is the festival of Holi. This is the fifth Holi for this blog ! Majority of well known Holi songs from Hindi movies have been covered during the last four such occasions. Those are the songs that one gets to listen from all radio and TV stations that play Holi songs. But we in this blog, unlike radio and TV, cannot repeat the same songs and we have to discuss “new” as yet undiscussed songs on every occasion.
