गाता जाये बंजारा

That is the image that forms in the mind. A distant, unfamiliar scenario. A solitary person trudging along a dusty road that leads through farms and fields, passing through towns big and small.

There is a purpose in the pace. There is a steadiness in the tread. There seems to be an unhurried and patient urgency in the forward movement.

Is he searching for someone, for something? Is he expecting a certain destination? I don’t know. The landmarks, they come and go, the milestones pass by. But he appears not to halt anywhere, never seems to take rest. Just a pause at a milestone, sees it with a searching eye, takes another breath, and then presses on.

He seems to be carrying something, slung on the shoulders. Is that an instrument of music? Or is it something else? What is it, I am not able to make out.

“Mohabbat Ki Jeet”(1960) was produced and directed by B S Ranga for Vikram Productions, Madras. This movie had Raja Sulochana, Ranjan, Sowcar Janki, Sriram, Rajagopal etc in it. It appears from the cast that this movie may have been a remake of some South Indian movie though HFGK is silent about this fact.

Mukesh and His Co-Singers – 3
—————————————-

The thought had crossed my mind a few months back. To calculate the sum of all the posts of contributors and subtract it from the grand total which would have given the obvious number. A number big enough to just admire, thank and congratulate with high gratitude. Thankfully, the pen and paper (and well a calculator) did not meet and so we had Sudhir ji planning his modus-operandi.

Else who knows, I would have written a common mail to both which I usually do and spoiled all the fun.

I got to know of Sudhir ji’s plans which he told me in person when I met him for a short visit to his house. Now wait. Isn’t our meeting a celebration to write a post? Yes indeed, but that shall wait for another day.

Atul ji’s 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 7
——————————————————————–

Sudhir ji, got in touch with us Atulwaasis and told us that there is a HUGE milestone coming up on the blog.

I had no clue that it was this huge. With my little knowledge of maths, I did some calculation and it works to an average of around 3 posts a day for the last 9 years. If that just seems like a number to you – you either do not understand hard work when you see it, or you are just a passer by seeing this blog for the first time.

While I still wonder how it is even possible to have such commitment and endurance I am reminded of what Atul ji often tells us – this is a “Labour of Love”. And then it all falls in place and makes so much sense. Atul ji has been a beacon of light, a guru, a nostalgia maker, the man who got all us crazy Atulwaasis together.

Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 19
————————————————————————-

First, let me congratulate our leader of this Blog for the unsurpassed feat of posting so many songs in one Blog.  I had the rare opportunity to meet him personally in our ‘MumbAtulite’ meet.  My impression is that he does not speak much but when he does, he speaks straight and to the point. (You cricketers use the phrase ‘with the straight bat’, right?)  He is also ‘famous’, or rather ‘infamous’ (pardon me for using the word, but I am using it without any negative shade to it), for not attending most of the Atulite meets.  We all very well know that he plans very much to attend, but his work schedule does not allow him to do so and has to cancel at the last moment.

[You have a right to perform your duties but without any expectation.  You have no right to the fruits of your works. Let yourselves be not attached to inaction.]

I used to remember this shloka (verses) during the telecasting of ‘Mahabharat’ on TV. In the recent period, I have once again started recalling this shloka as I find this shloka apt for Atul ji! He has been doing his karma (duties) of posting Hindi film and non-film songs faithfully since the inception of the Blog on July 19, 2008 without expectation of any kind of rewards.

mann panchhi albela
taaron ki nagri mein jaaye

If we replace the word ‘taaron’ with the word ‘gaanon’, it would be apt for this blog. Don’t we all freely wander in this cyber world of songs, lyrics and the stories behind them, as we browse the pages on Atul-Song-A-Day.

Coming to the song itself, this is one of the three Lata gems from ‘Mad Bhare Nain’ (1955). The other two are the romantic numbers “Aa Palkon Mein Aa” and the bhajan “Mo Se Saanchi Kaho Banwaari”.

Missing Films of 1960s – 28
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ever so often, I go searching for a song, an obscure song from an obscure film. I do not know what I will find, because the film is unfamiliar and the songs are unheard. I just dive into the list of songs sitting in my hard drive, with apprehensions, knowing not what will be discovered. And almost always, when I return to surface, I am gasping for breath, not that I was not able breath while in the depths of my collection, but because of wonder and joy on having laid my hands on a fabulous gem of a song that I had not heard before. And going by the awareness factor and availability online, the same may be true for friends and readers who may quite well also be listening to such gems for the first time.

It is my turn today to celebrate a ‘Yippeee’.  I am not sure if I have specifically announced a ‘Yippeee’ in any of my earlier posts. Possibly that could have been before the term ‘Yippeee’ was coined. Today we announce the completion of posting of all songs of the 1956 film ‘Makheechoos’. The important thing for me is that the music is by that unsung genius Vinod.
