Today (11 August 2022) is Rakshabandhan. This is the 15th Rakshabandhan for this blog. The first Rakshabandhan for the blog fell on 16 August 2008. That day saw the iconic Rakshabandhan song namely Bhaiyya mere raakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana (Chhoti Bahan)(1959) getting covered on the blog.

On those early days, only one song was discussed in a day. Subsequently multiple songs began to be covered daily. Festival days were no exception. So more than one Rakshabandhan songs were also discussed in the subsequent occasions.

Leela Desai was one of the top actresses during 1937-47 both in Kolkata and Mumbai. There was a curiosity in me as to why she suddenly disappeared from the film industry after 1947 when her career was at the peak. Thereafter, she lived in almost obscurity. What is surprising about Leela Desai is that information about her date/year of birth, her marital status, what she did after she left the film industry and when she passed away are unknown or sketchy.

The name of Chimanlal Trivedi, the producer-director may not ring bell in the minds of most of the admirers of old Hindi films. In Mumbai, he was the contemporary of well-known producer-directors like Chandulal Shah, A R Kardar, Mehboob Khan, V Shantaram etc in the 1940s.

Today’s song is from an obscure ‘never heard of’ type film of the early times of the Talkie era – Kaun Kisi ka-1939. The film was made by Hindustan Cinetone. It was directed by Chimanlal Luhar, a talented person. He was a rarity in those days as he was a Science graduate. In times when there were very few educated people in the film industry, he was respected everywhere.

Geeta Dutt – Solos and duets (01)
————————————–
This is a tribute post for Datta Naik, also known as N Datta, on his 33 death anniversary. It looks as if, N Datta formed a successful team with Sahir Ludhianvi as most of his popular songs are with Sahir in the period 1957-1959. He has composed a sizeable 349 songs in 54 films, out of which 221 are already in the blog.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Ranee-43, which was a Bi-lingual film made by Calcutta’s Barua Productions.

The film was directed by P C Barua and the music was by Kamal Dasgupta. Barring a few big movies, the Hindi-Bangla bilingual films did not become as successful as their Bangla versions. I feel the reasons were mainly two. One was that the cast of such films consisted of most names, with which the Hindi audience was not familiar. The second point was the style of acting and the dialogue delivery of the Bangla actors was deemed strange in Hindi belt. The Hindi used in films made in Bengal was too pure to be of the liking of people who were used to Hindustani language. The audience preferred ” pyar or muhabbat ” to ” prem “, for example.

Bhaari bhaari meena kumari
ghar mein jaa ke maara maari

This was the sales pitch sh’air by some urchins in Mumbai local trains, selling small items like hairbands, hair clips, fancy earrings, finger rings and combs etc. I have had an highly educating experience of travelling in local trains on regular basis from 1988 to 1994, during peak hours, traversing the length and breadth of Mumbai on central, western and harbor lines. The sales pitch and the bol bachchan street seller’s ingenuity in using colourful simile’s, in the present song reminded me of the long forgotten ditty above. (bhaari means costly or rich in mumbaiyya)
