I had no much idea about Jahanara Kajjan except that I was aware of a couple of her classical raag based songs in the film ‘Bharathari’ (1944). Very recently, I came across one more of her song ‘tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye ho’ from the film PRARTHANAA (1943). I heard this song for the first time and instantly liked it. The song is rendered in dadra style (crisp version of thumri ) based on raag Gaur-Malhar but with typical filmy musical orchestration of early 40s.

Today (25 november) is the 31st death anniversary of R C Boral (19 October 1903–25 November 1981). One of the earliest pioneers in the field of Hindi movie music, it was he who introduced the concept of playback singing in Indian movies by first employing it it “Dhoop Chhaaon” (1935). He has been described as the father of Indian Cinema Music by Anil Biswas.

“Saudamini” (1950) was a National Screen Production movie. It was directed by P C Joshi. The movie had Cuckoo, Leela Chitnis, P. Joshi, Sona Chatterji, Bikram Kapoor, Zubeida etc in it.

I am reasonably well versed with the profiles of maestro S D Burman and his son R D Burman but not about Meera Burman, wife of S D Burman and mother of R D Burman. I was also curious to know about her life after the untimely death of her only son in January 1994. Apart from keeping a low profile, Meera Burman remained in the background under the shadows of her illustrious husband and son. Contrary to my expectation, I was able to get enough information about her from the archives of newspapers reports, articles and Yahoo discussion forum of R D Burman Fans on the internet. But reading all the these material made me very sad, particularly after knowing that this multi-talented woman had spent the last 13 years of her life in a very pathetic condition.

“Karwat” (1949) is by now an obscure movie. This movie was a Shree Gopal Pictures production movie. It was directed by Prakash. The movie had Bhagwan, Satish, Leela Gupte, Baburao, Deepak, Ratanpriya, Anwari, Vasantrao etc in it.

Aayi deewaali deep jalaao

Today (13 november 2012) is Deewaali, the festival of light. This is the fifth Deewaali festival for this blog, which is quite an achievement for us, seeing that this blog has not just survived for such a long time, but has in fact progressed and thrived. Now it has become an online collaboration of likeminded music lovers who are contributing their mite and that is helping build up a valuable online musical repository.

Aayi deewaali deepon waali

Today (13 november 2012) is Deewaali, easily India’s biggest festival and a festival which also happens to be the time when Indians do their major shoppings of the year because this is supposed to be the most auspicious occasion for such activities. This festival in fact is celebrated as Laxmi Puja, Laxmi being the goddess of wealth and the consort of Vishnu, one of the three major Gods. Of course this festival is also celebrated as the day when Lord Ram (one of the reincarnations of Vishnu) returned back to Ayodhya with Sita and Laxman after completing his period of Vanwas.
