Today’s song is from the film Iqrar-42. This was just one of the many films- coming out of Ranjit’s factory. It was like their emphasis was on churning out films in quantity. They were not much worried about the quality of the films, it would seem to the observer. As such the number of hit and successful films coming out of Ranjit was certainly not very high, unlike New Theatres, Bombay Talkies or Prabhat.

Today’s song is from a film of the early 40s – Apna Ghar-1942. One song from this film was discussed about 5 years back here. That makes today’s song its second song. This film was made by Circo Productions, belonging to a professional- Chimanlal Trivedi. The film was directed by Debki Bose. This was his first Hindi film in Bombay after he moved from New Theatres, Calcutta, due to some differences.

‘Lalaji’ (1942) was produced by Mehboob Khan under the banner of National Studios and was jointly directed by Chimanlal Gandhi and Lalitchandra Mehta. The star cast included Krishnakant, Yashodara Katju, Yakoob, Vatsala Kumthekar, Amar, Sunalini Devi, Maya Devi, AR Kabuli, Kayam Ali etc. I have no idea about the story of the film. The montages of the film indicate that it was a comedy film with Yakub having an important role as Hiralal and A R Kabuli as Lalaji though the lead pairs of the film were Yashodara Katju and Krishnakant.

Today’s song is from a relatively obscure film, though it was said to be successful in those days. The song is from the film Prabhat-1941 – made by Tarun Pictures. It was directed by a true professional V.M. Vyas, who knew his job so well that 60% of his films were successful at the Box office. He took the best stars always and major singers and composers worked for him. His own banner was Sunrise Pictures, established in early 1941 and in the first 6 months itself his first film ‘ Ghar ki Laaj’ was completed. Prabhat was his second film as a director in 1941.

Today’s song is a rare song, from an unknown film Suhagi-48. Yes, the title is Suhagi and NOT Suhag. It is rather an unusual and misleading title. There is a cluster of titles around the word Suhag. There were 4 films as Suhag and also 4 films as Suhagan. There was a film Suhag raat ke Pehle and then there were 3 films as Suhag Raat. 2 films as Suhag Sindoor. There were two films with funny titles like Suhag ka Daan and Suhag ka Balidan. And among all this cluster poor film Suhagi was hidden in a corner !

Today’s song is from a film which hardly anyone knows. The name was unknown, the director was unknown and the 3 Music Directors who composed 8 songs by two lyricists, did not become famous. The film is Bedard-1949. It was directed by B.N.Chouhan, who is credited with two more films for direction, namely Ret mahal-49 and Jungle ki Duniya-59.

Today’s song is from an obscure film of 1944 – Dil ki Baat. The film was made by Atre Pictures, partly owned by P.K.Atre and actress Vanmala. Their relationship was similar to what C.Ramchandra and Lata Mangeshkar had in later years. The film was directed by Atre himself. The only other film he ever directed was Parinde-1945. He believed in hiring directors rather than directing films himself.
