aaye bahaar ban ke
lubhaa kar chale gaye. . .

These lines would apply to so many artists, especially those whose careers in the industry have been short lived, or curtailed for various reasons.  But whatever is the measure of the duration of their work in the industry, it is their creations that continue to delight us, and keeps the memories alive. Even if it is one song.  And the fun part is the process of discovery that continues.  Some of these lesser known artists ended up working for lesser known banners and films.  Their music would only sometimes make it to the mainstream and popular cinema.  Most of the time they created songs for movies that remained unknown and obscure.  Today, when we dig up such unheard gems, that first encounter is such a charm and a pleasure.

Gopal Bahadur Singh is one such songwriter, whose work mostly remained confined to religious an stunt action films in the 1950s and 60s.  We are more familiar with his pen name – Gopal Singh Nepali or GS Nepali, the poet who gave us the timeless bhajan – “Darshan Do Ghanshyam Nath Mori Ankhiyaan Pyaasi Re” in the film ‘Narsi Bhagat’ (1957).

Remembering GS Nepali on the anniversary of his passing away today (17th April).

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s….Song No. 16
————————————————

Moving from 1958, we come near the end of the decade with the year 1959. It was about 12 years since the upheaval in the film industry with the mass migration of film artistes from India to Pakistan, post Partition. Even after that some movements were still going on with late goers. Fortunately normalcy had returned to the industry by that time, much faster than was expected by the world watchers. Unlike Pakistan-who had to build a fresh new industry in their country- our infrastructure was intact, the base was wide and solid and vacancies were filled up promptly, by artistes waiting in the wings.

Ok so now we know – प्यार किसे कहते हैं। (what is this thing we call love). Explained quite lucidly in this song.

jabse mili teri meethi mohabbat
chocolate ka khaana chhod diya

Discovering your sweet love
Have forsaken even chocolate

Aah, what a sublime sacrifice, forsaking the delicious trappings of this world, all for having found love.  Nothing, no other sacrifice could be more convincing.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s….Song No-14
————————————————–
Today’s song is from a 1958 film-Night Club.

With great determination and very much reluctantly, have moved away from the songs of 1957. As I mentioned I had shortlisted 17 songs from this year alone. It was ridiculous ! With songs from other years, the series would have become a marathon of about 30 odd songs. This is not acceptable to me. Stretching ONE theme for such a long time,in my opinion loses its meaning, charm and writer’s interest. We have already enjoyed 5 Gems from 1957. This much laxity was enough for 1957. The balance songs, I am sure, will find their way to this Blog, anyway.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s….Song No-13
———————————————–

Today’s song is from a film called Garma garam-57 which makes its Debut on the Blog today. You may wonder why this 1957 film did not have even one of its songs posted here,so far. The answer is,this film was an outright B grade film with second level actors and its Music Director was a talented composer without much luck. Therefore,in spite of having some very good songs, the film did not get ay recognition. It went as it came, without anyone noticing. Too many comedy actors were stuffed in the cast- Agha, Gope, Omprakash, Bhagwan, Maruti, Haarun, Chhota Gope and Indira Bansal. The film industry is replete with examples of films becoming flops when so many comedians act in one film (exceptions like’ Bombay to Goa” etc are also there though)’.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s… Song No. 12
—————————————————-

Today’s song is from the 1957 film Ustad.

Ustad was one of those Detective movies that Ashok Kumar has become a specialist in. He was the undisputed choice of all film makers for this genre of films. He too did justice to such films. However, may be due to his age or looks, or due to the nature of this genre, his Heroines in these films were often from the second rung or or else his old companions like Nalini Jaywant, Kamini Kaushal etc. Kumkum, Geeta Gali, and some such actresses acted with him in such movies. Of course Madhubala and even Nutan acted with him in such films.
