Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 3

Aha,
lailaa ki ungliyaan hain
majnoo ki pasliyaan hain
do do paise mein le lo babu
naram taazi kakdiyaan hain
I remember this jingle from childhood. Occasionally used to hear it from the roadside hawkers, and once I even heard it in a radio play on Vividh Bharti. Then many years later, I encountered this song also. I used to wonder, whether the song came first or this jingle came first – which is based on which. As I prepare this post, just casually I googled it, and found references to Lucknow and Agra where fresh vegetable vendors are known to use this jingle. So maybe this is more of a folk tradition, converted into a film song later on. Just like “Jumkha Gira Re Bareilly Ke Bazaar Mein“. 😉

Today (3 february 2015) is the 15th anniversary of A R Qureshi (29 april 1919-3 february 2000). He composed music in a few Hindi movies under the name of A R Qureshi and later on made his mark as a tabla player extraordinaire under the name of Ustad Alla Rakha Khan. Indians, not surprisingly, did not fully appreciate his talents, but western musicians did. Some of them studied his tabla playing techniques and learnt new things from him.

“Bhaagam Bhaag” (1956) was a light hearted comedy movie. It was produced and directed by Bhagwan. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Bhagwan, Smriti Biswas, Badri Prasad, Shashikala, Kumkum, Tiwari etc in it. In this movie, everyone played characters who were named the same as their actual names. For instance, Kishore Kumar played a character named Kishore and Bhagwan played a character named Bhagwan. The same was the case with other actors too. So if someone like me did not know an actor called Badri Prasad, then I would be able to identify him by watching this movie because he was named Badri Prasad in this movie. 🙂

A very adorable sweetness, that is what her voice always conveys. Be it a song of joy or verses of pensive sadness, it is the amiable pleasantness of the voice that appeals the most. Just earlier in the day, Bakhshish Singh ji and I were conversing about this anniversary today. One of his comments sounded very charming. He said, no matter what is the tone of the song, as you listen to it, you can feel a smile behind the sound. May it be a cheerless song of sadness, even then the voice sounds as if there is a sweet smile behind it. That is Suraiya’s voice for you.
Remembering this sweet and sad sound and the singer behind it, on the anniversary of her passing away today (31st January).
