Today’s song is from the comedy film Hangama-1952.
1952 was an year which was going through a lean period for Hindi films. Increased costs of Film production, escalating rates of stars and music Directors, establishment of Star System in place of earlier Studio System, increasing taxes, decreasing number of Cinema Halls etc caused a worry in the film industry. Financiers with Black money were making films – in 1952 the number of Hindi films made went up to 105 from 97 of 1951, but dropped again to 98 in 1953. Most films were of lower quality. Because of superior music there were some great films too, but the situation was grave nevertheless.

Today’s song is from the film Bandish-1955.
The film was directed by Satyen Bose and the music was by Hemant Kumar, with his assistant Ravi Shankar Sharma- or simply Ravi. This was Ravi’s last film as an assistant to Hemant Kumar. He was simultaneously giving music to film Vachan -1955, as an independent Music Director. His career grew successfully but he never forgot the help Hemant Kumar gave to him in his early years of film music. Till Hemant Kumar was connected with Hindi films, Ravi used him for songs in his films, wherever it was suitable. Hemant Kumar’s last Hindi film came in 1979 (Love in Canada) and Ravi lasted till 2000 (Ek alag Mausam).

Today’s song is from an obscure, forgotten film ‘ Golkunda ka Qaidi-1954.
When this film was released in Hyderabad, I was still in High school. In those days, in Hyderabad state, in addition to the routine subjects in the school, for the 10th standard, there used to be a novel subject called ” Non-Detail “. There used to be a world famous novel, drama, travelogue or a Biography taught in this subject. The purpose was to acquaint the students with the top class literature of the world and cultivate the habit of reading extra-curricular famous books. I don’t think that this was practiced in any other state of India. This truly helped the students to inculcate interest in reading books other than their curriculum.
