In the financial markets to which I belonged until my retirement, there is an oft repeated remark that not even a die-hard practitioner or expert in the financial markets can claim that he knows everything about the markets. These days we are digging up the songs of N Datta and we are discovering one forgotten gem after another. These are songs that may not have come to the notice of many music lovers because these songs, along with the movie, were forgotten with time. Now adays, thanks to technology and also music enthusiasts, these songs are coming to the fore once again, often for the first time after their original exposure, which may have been some half a century ago.

Yatrik, a vintage film was made in 1952. I had heard so many times, so many good things about this movie from my mother, when I was a little kid. But, was never too much interested in old movies mainly because they had too many songs. Because of the age & my limited “soch” to understand the depth of these songs, I never paid any attention either to watch any movies on Doordarshan or to listen to those songs on radio.

‘Hum hain raahi pyaar ke’ – the phrase reminds me of an iconic song “ham hain raah pyaar ke ham se kuchh naa boliye” from the film NAU DO GYAARAH (1957) and the Amir Khan-Juhi Chawala starrer film HUM HAIN RAAHI PYAAR KE (1993). I was not aware of the fact that there was one more film by the same name until I came across an audio clip of a beautiful song from that film.

“Milaap” (1955) was the debut movie of N Datta as a full feledged music director. This movie has by and large been forgotten by now alongwirh its music. But in the process of digging up the songs of this movie, we are coming up with one gem after another.

I find that there are 18 songs listed under ‘Song excluded from movie’ category in this blog. Although the sample is not representative one to come to a definite conclusion, it is interesting to note that O P Nayyar leads in this category with 5 songs followed by Madan Mohan(4 songs), S D Burman (3 songs) and Naushad(2 songs). Sajjad Hussain, Husnalal Bhagatram, Bulo C Rani and Roshan have one song each in this category.
