Something providential in the coincident that today is the birth anniversary of two wonderful dancers and performers of the Hindi silver screen. Yes, today, 21st October is the day that both Shammi Kapoor and Helen share as their date of birth. And not that it is a strange or unique occurrence. Many people share their dates of birth with many other known, even renowned people. But I single out this occurrence as special – these two wonderful people have been contemporaries in the film industry, they have performed together in many movies, and the most important, both of them represent that combination of energy and fun and delight and enjoyment that is unique to their theatrical personae.

Expressions of love are varied and come in multitude of flavors. And probably the largest collection of such flavors are the songs of Hindi films. It is remarkable that in each film, the poets, and the directors get together and attempt to present these expressions of love in novel and as yet untried ways. And so also in this film and this song. The entire song is presented with the hero firmly clasping one hand of the heroine and not letting her go, while all the time he is singing words, exhorting her to leave if she wants to, nobody is stopping her – Jaaiye Jaaiye Huzoor, Aapko Kis Ne Rokaa Hai.

A gem of a song from the team of Asad Bhopali and Usha Khanna. The film is Simla Road (1969), one more from the now very familiar Jugal Productions. Producer-director Jugal Kishore was an active film maker in the 60s and 70s, mostly producing B Grade action thrillers and films of intrigue and gangsters. Simla Road is no different. An action thriller starring Dev Kumar, Sarita, KN Singh, Jugal Kishore, Madhumati, Jaishree, Brahma Bhardwaj, Leela Misra, Murad, Mehmood Jr., Mirza Musharraf, Maruti, Dilip Dutt, Mahohar Deepak, the film has some very lovely songs composed by Usha Khanna.

With a film title as ‘Haaye Mera Dil’ and with Kishore Kumar and IS Johar in the star cast, one can be assured that the film is going to be a comedy about romantic interests of the heart. And assuredly, the film is a successful comedy, and as in all such films, one has to overlook the glitches in the storyline, not ask to be convinced about plot sequencing, and just relax and enjoy the fun. Haaye Mera Dil (1968) is production under the banner of Manohar Films, Bombay, directed by apparently a duo of directors Ved-Madan (that is how the name appears in the credits). The music is by Usha Khanna, and the lyrics are shared amongst Anand Bakshi, SH Behari and PL Santoshi. The star line up includes Kishore Kumar, Kumkum, IS Johar, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri, Majnu, Raj Mehra, Lakshmi Chhaayaa.
