“Free Love” (1974) was not a sleazy movie, despite its title. It was a C grade movie though and it had Kiran Kumar and Yogita Bali in lead roles. The movie sank without trace. I for one never knew in 1974 that a movie of this name was doing the rounds in movie halls. In my town this movie was never released.

I am not very good in remembering important dates viz birthdays etc, unless it happens to be my own . I remember my daughter’s birthday too because her countdown for the next birthday is an ongoing process. There are occasions when I have forgotten the birthday of my wife ( Disclaimer- Do not try it at home with your wife). In this blog, the only important days I remember are the obvious ones viz important natioanal holidays or important Indian festivals. On those days, I post songs relevant to those occasions.

The charm of Hindi films for me began from the time I began watching them avidly. The charm lay in those unique features of the Hindi film; multi-starrer, great fight scenes, action-packed, zingy songs and scintillating dialogues. If this was coupled with a lost-and-found brother/friend plot, with messages on religious harmony, and with good triumphing over evil, what more could a teenager want!

Many of the songs I have posted on this blog so far have been songs of the 1970s. I will not be so presumptuous as to claim that these songs are any better than songs of another decade. Every decade has produced its memorable songs and many would consider the golden period of Hindi film music to have started already in the 1940s/50s.

My memories of Sharmilee (1971) are associated with my seeing this movie on my first-ever visit to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1972. I have described some of my experiences of that visit on the post relating to the song “khilte hain gul yahaan”.

Songs play a very important role in the overall experience of a movie goer. Normally it takes a while before the first song kicks in. But there are occasions when the movie begins with a song. Credits are rolling in and a song is playing in the background. As the credit ends, so does the song, and the story begins in the right earnest.

I had stumbled onto Atul’s admirable effort a few months ago when I was looking for the lyrics of “Aaj pahli tarikh hai” for a non-film piece for my own blog. After I posted the piece, I sent the link to Atul who not only read that piece, but also several others on my blog. He has been prompt -and generous- with his comments. Over time we had sporadic email exchanges. We discovered that not only we had a common interest (Hindi film songs) but also our backgrounds; similar age, similar geography (he from Ranchi and I from Jamshedpur; both in Jharkhand) and both from middle-class families.

It is my gut feel (and I may be wrong here) that the early 70s saw more newcomers entering the Hindi film industry for significant roles (not necessarily hero/heroine) than any other period before this time.
