“Baazaar Band Karo” (1974), though a recent movie by the standards of this blog was a movie I knew nothing about when I lived through 1974. This obscure movie was produced and directed by B R Ishara who had the reputation of making sleazy movies meant to titillate, if movie reviewers of Hindi magazines that I read were to be believed.

Imagine. 33 films in a single year. And songs recorded – one hundred and eighty. In a single year. An average of almost one song every other day, composed, finalized, recorded, published. It is definitely one thing to talk about quality of music produced – that is the purist’s argument. But think of the producers who instilled their faith in the talent and work of this one music director – that is the populist argument to consider.

Here is the ‘U’ song in the series of A-Z of Rafi songs. I knew this song vaguely, but when looking for ‘U” song in the list, I could not recognize it. I decided to try it because it is a Rafi solo composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. I heard the whole song and picturization, I liked the energy and mischief in the composition. The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri.

Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, the top male and female stars of 1970s, combined for the first time in 1974 in “Premnagar” (1974). Rajesh Khanna’s stars were setting at that time and the movie did not do as well as most Rajesh Khanna movies did just a few years ago during his heady days as the heartthrob of movie goers.
