I have become reacquainted with several of these songs again after a passage of three decades or so. And I am not the only one. Several readers of the same generation also offered similar remarks about these songs.

“Mili” (1975) was a copy of “Anand” (1971) which in turn was a copy of a Japanese award winning movie that Hrishikesh Mukherji had seen in a film festival sometime in late 1960s. I do not now remember the name of this movie but I had read about it in magazines of 1970s. I request other readers to tell me the name of this movie which inspired these movies.

A change in sequencing – I pulled this song up from later in sequence to today, and I shall explain. This song is simply THE most favorite soft romantic song of mine. Hrishikesh Mukherjee had watched a Japanese movie, which depicts a man who has only a few days to live but instead of being melancholic, he lives his life cheerfully and spreads happiness all around him. Hrishikesh Mukherjee liked that movie so much that he adpated the movie into Hindi and created “Anand” (1970). Not content with that, he re adapted the same adaptation to change the gender of the main character and he thus came up with “Mili” (1975). Both these movies were critically well acclaimed and well received by the ordinary movie watchers as well.

“Mausam” (1975) is a movie that is known as much for the acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore as for its music. Unfortunately Madan Mohan, the music director of the movie was not alive to see the success of this movie. For much of his life, movies embellished by his wonderful songs would bite the dust as the box office, and ironically, the movies released after his death, viz “Mausam” (1975) and “Laila Majnu” (1976) turned out to be hit movies riding on the music of these movies.

Most nice songs usually become popular. Or is it really so ? There is much legwork involved before the songs of a movie can become popular. The movie, as well as its songs need to arouse the curiosity of public before their release. For that the movie and its songs need to be marketed. In case the movie has saleable stars and the movie is made by a well known production house with deep pockets, then the songs of that movie stand a good chance of being heard.
