#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————
(Asha Bhonsle’s 92nd birthday 8th September 2025)
Today 8th September 2025 is the ninety-third birthday of legendary singer of Hindi Films – Asha Bhonsle. On this occasion we are celebrating her birthday by presenting some songs sung by her.
The song which I am presenting in this post is from the 1986 movie ‘Jeeva’. This movie is best remembered for the classic song ‘roz roz aankhon taley’ composed by R.D.Burman, written by Gulzar and sung by Asha Bhonsle and Amit Kumar. Various stories on internet about this song mention that initially it was supposed to be a solo song by Asha Bhonsle. But on listening to this song Sanjay Dutt felt that he should also have lines to lip-sync in this song, and thus an extra stanza sung by Amit Kumar was added to this song.

In the Indian traditional societal setting, the men are regarded as the bread winner for the family while the women are assigned as homemakers who stay at home and manage the kitchen, housekeeping, taking care of the children etc. In urban setting, some women have dual roles. They are not only the homemakers, but they are also the working women giving the financial support to the family. Men are not expected to be homemakers. These gender-based responsibilities have been majorly followed in India since long. The role reversal in responsibilities between husband and wife was unthinkable even in the last century and it is still not fully appreciated.
There has been some cases of role reversal taking place especially in metropolitan and urban India. I had known one such case in my office as early as in 1965 when the wife was working in my office and her husband was employed in a private firm. But the situation in the family forced the wife to think of resigning from her service to look after her infant when the alternative arrangements did not work out. Her husband volunteered to resign from his private job on a realistic consideration as the wife was getting higher salary than him. At that time, her husband was the talking point in my office as it was thought to be a revolutionary step by him.

Hullo Atuldom
Has any follower of this blog seen the 1990 release “Amiri Garibi”? What about “Chhoti Si Mulaaqat”? Or a few of Jeetendra’s movies of the 1970s like “Jawaab”, “Dildaar” etc. where he plays a rustic/ villager who’s sole aim is to tame the haughty, city-educated daughter of the village zamindar; something on the lines of TAMING OF THE SHREW (a concept which the ladies/ females of this generation will strongly object to) Lastly, I would also like to draw the attention of the followers to “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977).
Well I propose to introduce a song from the 1990 release “Amiri Garibi”. It was produced by Pradeep Sharma (a.k.a Tutu Sharma, also Padmini Kolhapure’s husband). Harmesh Malhotra was the director. Laxmi-Pyare were the music directors for songs written by Anand Bakshi. Shailendra Singh, Alka Yagnik, Kavitha Krishnamoorthy & Anuradha Paudwal were the playback singers used. Jeetendra, Rekha, Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon, Rishi Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Om Shivpuri, Rohini Hattangadi, Urmila Bhatt, Sushma Seth, Jayshree Gadkar, Chand Usmani, Yunus Parvez, Guddi Maruti, & Shakti Kapoor and Pran were part of the starcast of this film. Tiku Talsania & Guddi Maruti were also in the film.

This is my 99th post and I wanted it to be a Kishore Kumar song, as I have covered Mohd. Rafi Saab and Asha Bhosle in my past posts.
I could manage to find a song which fit my criteria of being rare and by Kishore Da. I hope you will enjoy this song!!!
Siskiyaan 1982 was produced and directed by Rana Jung Singh. It had music by Sapan Jagmohan. The songs were written by Naqsh Layallpuri and Shiv Kumar Saroj.
The movie starred Danny Denzongpa, Sonia Gill, Kalpana Iyer, Madhu Kapoor, Bhagwan, Narendra Chanchal, etc

The film belongs to light comedy genre with the background of Lucknawi cultural milieu. The film was released on March 21, 1981.

‘Kaanch Ki Deewaar’ (1986) was an obscure film which I came to know only recently. The film was produced by Kamal Chaudhary and M N Yasin and the latter directed the film. Both the names are new to me and this was their debut film. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Om Prakash, Rajan Sippy (debutant), Purnima, Neelu Phule, Urmila Bhatt, Raj Mehra, Lalita Kumari, Murad, Madhu Malini, Jagdeep, Birbal, Hina Kausar, Jaishree T etc. The film was released on January 31, 1986, about three months after the passing away of Sanjeev Kumar.
It appears that the film took long time to complete or to get it released as I find that there is a song by Mohammed Rafi in the film who had passed away in July 1980. The film’s lead actress, Smita Patil had started working in the mainstream commercial films in 1981 by signing a spate of such films to prove that she can as well be a successful actor in such films. The same combination of producer and director had started one more film, ‘Waqt Kaa Sikandar’ (1996) when the film under discussion was delayed in getting released. It seems the second film failed to get completed or released.

‘Baat Ban Jaaye’ (1986) was produced by Anil Hanspal and Nitin Manmohan which was directed by Bharat Rungachary. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Utpal Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, Raj Babbar, Amol Palekar, Aruna Irani, Jalal Agha, Shakti Kapoor, Adi Irani, Imtiaz Khan, Jagdeep, Prema Narayan, Viju Khote etc. The film belongs to the family comedy genre. It was the first film for Nitin Manmohan (son of actor, Manmohan) as a producer and second film as a director for Bharat Rungachary. Sanjeev Kumar passed away before the release of the film. However, he had completed all his work for the film.
The credit title of the film did not mention the names of the actors. Probably director felt that that since each actor in the film had his share of comedy, to present the film as a collective efforts of the entire cast in creating a family comedy film rather than showcasing the individual actors by mentioning their names. Incidentally, Sanjeev Kumar, Amol Palekar, Raj Babbar and Mithun Chakraborty were in the role of the prospective bridegrooms for the wealthy businesswoman, Zeenat Aman in the film.
