(Rajesh Khanna’s 82nd Birth Anniversary)

Today 29th December 2024 is the eighty-second birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29.12.2024-18.07.2012). On this occasion, we have paid our tributes to him by presenting a few songs picturised on him. In this post I am presenting one more song picturised on him.
This song is from the movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 21.01.1984. In the year ‘1984’there were three movies released based on the same theme that dealt with our socio-political scenario and prevalent corruption and corrupt practices among governing institutions in the country. These were the movies Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’, ‘Inquilaab’ and ‘Yeh Desh’. However, if one notices, while the movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’ was categorized as a movie from ‘social genre’ the other two movies viz. ‘Inquilaab’ and ‘Yeh Desh’ were categorized as ‘patriotic’ or ‘deshbhaktee pradhaan’ movies. Among these three movies, only ‘Inquilaab’ was said to be a successful movie. The movie ‘Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar’ was praised by critics but it was said to be a commercial failure.

“Bewafaai-1985” was directed by R. Thyagarajan for ‘Devar Films, Madras’. It has Rajesh Khanna, Rajinikant, Tina Munim, Padmini Kolhapure, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Pran, Vijay Arora, Guru Bachan, Prem Kumar, Anand, H. Vijay Kumar, Raj Baldev Raj, Peelu Wadiya, Guddi, Babli and others. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 01.07.1985. This movie has as many as nine songs which were contributed by three lyricist viz. Indeewar (two songs), Farooque Kaiser (three songs), and Hasan Kamal (four songs). Music for “Bewafaai-1985” is composed by Bappi Lahiri. The singers for this movie include Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, and Lata Mangeshkar.

The cast of this movie has Rajesh Khanna, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Rajan Sippy, Madhuri Dixit, Om Shivpuri, Iftekhar, Om Prakash, Paintal, Bharat Bhooshan, Chand Usmani, Shammi, Brahm Bharadwaj, Yogesh Sharma, Shaikh, Surendra Pal, Pradeep Sharma, Rana Jung Bahadur, Ashok Saksena, Kamaldeep, Arun Mathur, Savita Bajaj, Hamid, Nisaar and others. Today 22nd December’2024 is the 6001st day for the blog. So it is another important day since it is the ‘starting point’ of a ‘new beginning’ again. At one of my previous employer my senior always uses to say that the first day of every month is the most suitable day to start anything new. Here the context was of implementing new things, new procedures, new SOPs at workplace. In our day to day routine also when a calendar month ends and a new month begins we generally are excited and it does give a ‘new feeling’ and motivates to take a ‘fresh guard’. I remember in my childhood days when the song from ‘Pehli Taareekh’ used to play on radio, listening to it was very joyful, and even now whenever this song is played on ‘Vividh Bhartee’ on first day of a month it gives me the same excitement and feeling.

‘Aahistaa Aahistaa-1981’ was directed by Eesmayeel Shroff for ‘New World Enterprises, Bombay’. It was produced by Sibte Hasan Rizvi. The cast of this movie included Shammi Kapoor, Nanda, and Padmini Kolhapure, Deven Verma, Shashikala, Ashalata, Aruna Irani, Savita Bajaj, Sudhir Pande, Manisha, Rakesh Bedi, Leela Mishra, Master Sandeep, Baby Waheeda, Baby Gazala, Sunder Taneja, Kalu Singh, Krishnakant Pandya (junior), Deepak, Iliyas Contractor, Pramod Pathak, D.A. Ambaule, Harish, Suresh, Ramesh and others. The movie introduced Kunal Kapoor and Soni Razdan. Kadar Khan, Rahman and Girish Karnad had a special appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.10.1981. The music of ‘Aahistaa Aahistaa-1981’ was composed by the genius music director Khayyam Saab. Many songs from this movie became popular during those days.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Alag Alag-1985’. It was the most ambitious & hyped project of actor-producer Rajesh Khanna which failed at the box office. Though the music of the movie by R.D. Burman made waves and a couple of the songs from this movie became popular too, the good musical score by R.D. Burman too could not help the film much. The music of this movie lost out because of the music of other movies like ‘Ram Teree Gangaa Mailee’ and ‘Pyaar Jhuktaa Naheen’ etc which were released in the same year i.e. 1985.

Hullo Atuldom
Raghuvaran- a name not many followers of Hindi films may be familiar about. Maybe if I list out some of the Hindi films that he acted in, Hindi Film Fans (HFF) will recognize him by the characters he played. He was popular in films made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada & Malayalam. He had a with his special style and voice modulation. He played mostly negative or grey-shaded characters. Like all aspirants into the film industry, his first films had him play the main protagonist, but these met with little success. ‘Silk Silk Silk’ in which he played a villain opened the floodgates of offers for him and he got a spate of Tamil films.

Hullo Atuldom
“Chor police” (1983) was the directorial debut of Amjad Khan and produced by his wife Shehla Khan and Vinay Kumar Sinha (who was Amjad Khan’s secretary too). It was presented by Cinema International. It had R D Burman’s music and songs were written by Nida Fazli & Vithalbhai Patel (as per the movie’s titles). Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Vinod Sehgal and Vanita Mishra were the playback singers used.
