In my last article, I have covered the details of the film ‘Jumbish’ (1986) which was produced and directed by Salahuddin Pervez who also wrote the fictional story, screenplay, dialogues and the lyrics. Surprisingly, he was not connected with film industry in any capacity before he ventured into making the film under discussion. Since Jaidev, the music director of the film was one of my favourites, I heard all the seven songs in the film which were all melodious as expected from him. The songs, especially the ghazal and nazm written by Salahuddin Parvez were poetic with unusual metaphors. With his poetic lyrics, the unusual story of the film and the symbolic dialogues he used, I became curious to know about his background. Checking on him on the internet led me to a PDF of his biography on Sahitya Akademy website following his winning the Sahitya Akademy Award in 1991. “Ye Vaada Raha”(1982) was a very popular movie with the teenagers of those days, but apparently the grown up section of the population did not like the movie much and so the movie received a lukewarm response at the box office. Personally I was barely aware of this movie and I did not watch it seeing that I only watched Amitabh Bachchan movies those days.
“Ye Vaada Raha”(1982) was produced by Ramesh Bahl and directed by Kapil Kapoor for Rose movies, Bombay. This “social” movie had Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Poonam Dhillon, Sarika, Rakhi, Rakesh Bedi, Ifthikar, Agha, Sunder, Gulshan Bawra, Hari Shivdasani, Chandu Prakash, Madan Joshi, Shrimati Mistri, Prasad, Pappu, Geeta, Aditya, Shanta, Salma, Asha, Avinash Thakur etc in it. Shammi Kapoor had played a special role in this movie.

Hullo Atuldom
2025 marks the 51st year in the entertainment industry for Shabana Azmi, not counting films that she may have been associated with during her training at FTII. Her ‘Parinay’ released on 1st January 1974; her debut film Shyam Benegal’s “Ankur’ is also a 1974 film. The last film starring Shabana Azmi came in 2023, actually there were two ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ & ‘Ghoomer’- I have seen both and as usual Shabana Azmi (the actor) cannot be missed. There is an upcoming film ‘Lahore 1947’ set against the backdrop of partition of India.

The song in this post is from the movie ‘Zameen Aasmaan-1984’. It was directed by Bharat Rangachari for Film Group, Bombay. Subhash Gupta & Uday Narayan Singh were the proudcers of this movie. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 14.05.1984. The cast of this movie has Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi Gulzar, Rekha, Sanjay Dutt, Anita Raj, Mazhar Khan (2), and Satyen Kappu, Kalpana Iyer, Chandramohan Khanna, Rajnath, Amol Sen and others.

‘Basera’ (1981) was produced by Ramesh Behl under his banner, Rose Movies and was directed by Ramesh Talwar. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee, Rekha, Poonam Dhillon, Raj Kiran, Iftekhar, A K Hangal, Sudha Chopra etc. The film was based on a Marathi novel written by Leela Phansalkar. In fact, Ramesh Talwar has directed IPTA play, Tanhaai’ (1971) based on this novel. It was decided to convert his IPTA play into the film, ‘Basera’ (1981).
The film is about two sisters who are wedded to the same man by a twist of fate. In an interview published in ‘Filmfare’, April 22, 2016, Ramesh Talwar had revealed that for the roles of two sisters, he had already finalised Rakhee. He told Rakhee that if she accepted the role of the younger sister, he would take Nutan for the role of elder sister. However, Rakhee preferred the elder sister’s role and suggested Rekha’s name for the younger sister’s role. After the separation of Rakhee and Gulzar, this was the first film with Rakhee in which Gulzar got associated as the screenplay, dialogues and song writer. Interestingly, Rekha, apart from her role as the second wife of Shashi Kapoor is also in the role of Raj Kiran’s mother, who in reality, is elder to her by 5 years.

“Chor Police”(1983) was produced by Shehla Khan (Amjad Khan’s wife) and Vinay Kumar Sinha (Amjad Khan’s secretary) and directed by Amjad Khan for Cinema International, Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Master Vishal (also known as Master Bittu), Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Kalpana Iyer, Satyen Kappu, Sudhir, Madhu Malhotra, Imtiaz Khan, Amjad Khanetc in it.Vinod Mehra and Bindiya Goswami made special appearances whereas U.A.E. Narendranath, Zarina Wahab and Nazneen made friendly appearances.

Here is the fifth and final song of “Chor Police”(1983) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Nida Fazli is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman. The song is picturised on Kalpana Iyer and others as a dance song.
One notices that the voice of Asha Bhonsle was used in all the five songs of the movie. She sang for Parveen Babi (two songs), Kalpana Iyer (two songs) and Bindiya Goswami (one song) in this movie.

‘Imaandaar’ (1987) was produced by Surendra Pal Chaudhary and Sarla Sandhu and was directed by Sushil Malik. The cast included Sanjay Dutt and Farah Naaz in the lead roles supported by Pran, Sumeet Saigal, Satyen Kappu, Vikas Anand, Rohan Kapoor, Ranjeet, Mehmood, Om Prakash, Birbal, Chandrashekhar, Sudhir Dalvi, Dinesh Hingoo, Shammi, Shashi Kiran, Mehmood Jr., Ram Sethi, Subbiraj etc.
The film was a Prakash Mehra presentation which indicates as to who was behind this film. Sushil Malik, the director of the film was Prakash Mehra’s assistant director. The film’s producer, Surendra Pal Chaudhary was one of the partners of Prakash Mehra Productions. Another connection of this film with Prakash Mehra is his trademark film story revolving around a homeless, abandoned and orphaned lead actor, like in ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), ‘Jwaalaamukhi’ (1980), ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Sharaabi’ (1984) etc. In a way, Prakash Mehra was replicating his own story who was an orphan child having lost his mother and thereafter his father abandoning him when he was 8 year of age.

This is once again a very very rare song sung by the one and only Kishore Kumar. The song is penned by Naqsh Layallpuri and composed by Sapan Jagmohan.
A few days ago I had introduced this movie on the blog with this song.
As mentioned in my earlier post, “Siskiyaan” (1982) was produced and directed by Rana Jung Singh. It had music by Sapan Jagmohan. The songs were written by Naqsh Layallpuri, M G Hashmat and Shiv Kumar Saroj.
