In the context of Hindi film music, we have often heard the word ‘plagiarism’ for copying tunes, melodies, orchestrations and even the lyrics. The plagiarism in Hindi film music has become more pronounced from 1980s onwards during which some of the new generation of Hindi film music directors faced the allegations of plagiarism in their compositions of many songs. It came into open when two songs of the same tune, ‘thamma thamma loge’ in ‘Thanedaar’ (1990) and second, ‘jumma chhumma de do’ in ‘Hum’ (1991) were released within a short gap which were said to be inspired from ‘tama tama’ by Mory Kante (1988). Some of the music directors have dismissed the allegation of plagiarism by saying that such song compositions have not been copied but have been ‘inspired’ from original sources.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-7 (1982)

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 11)
——————————————————————————————————

We are celebrating the eighty-sixth birth anniversary of the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman today (27 June 2025) who was born on this day in the year 1939.

Any discussion about songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman is incomplete without discussing songs penned by Gulzar Saab. The association of Pancham viz. Pancham was assisting his father Sachin Dev Burman – ‘The Prince – Musician’, and Gulzar Saab was assisting the great director Bimal Roy. Both Gulzar and Pancham struggled together to gain foothold in their chosen individual fields.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-6 (1985)

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 10)
——————————————————————————————————

Celebrating Pancham’s music today on his 86th Birth Anniversary, we have a song from the 1985 movie ‘Sitamagar’ in this post. This song however was excluded from the movie but I am sure readers will enjoy listening to it. Readers may feel the same what I felt after listening to this song. This might be the only song where we have Shailendra Singh singing in a low baritone voice.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-5 (1989)

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 9)
——————————————————————————————————

We are celebrating Pancham’s eighty-seventh birthday today (27 June 2025) on this musical blog. In the previous post I had mentioned about the ‘declining period’ of Pancham as it is said to start with the eighties. During this period he also had health issues and people also started deserting him. But, as I mentioned there were few people who stood by him even in his bad days and they willing to work with him. Pancham was also detemined to bounce back. One of these persons who stood by Pancham’s was his fan turned producer-director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Chopra was planning ‘Parindaa-1989’ and he had approached Pancham. When he met Pancham he found him in a stage of low self-esteem. However Vidhu Vinod Chopra insisted that only Pancham would give music to his film and he convinced Pancham to do so. Pancham in turn went on to extend help to Chopra when he didn’t have money to pay for the recordings.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-4 (1987)

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 8)
——————————————————————————————————

Today 27 th June 2025 is the eighty-sixth birth anniversary of the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman. We would have been celebrating his eighty-seventh birthday today had he been alive today. It is said that Pancham’s music ruled the roost through the seventies and then began to lose ground from the eighties. It was not because the quality of his songs went down. Rather it was because the taste of music lovers changed. There were less takers for his kind of music as the 1980s wore on.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-4 (1984)

(Celebrating Pancham’s 86th Birth Anniversary 27.06.2025 – 3)
——————————————————————————————————

Today we are celebrating Pancham’s music on the blog on his 86th birth anniversary. Whenever there is a discussion of songs composed by R D Burman and I recollect my oldest memories of Rahul Dev Burman’s songs I have a some stories and incidence to share that have never forgotten. I was born in February-1968. For Pancham that was the year of movies like ‘Abhilaashaa’ and ‘Padosan’. Songs of these movies would have started making waves by then. We know that the music of both the movies catapulted R D Burman to the top, so it is natural that the songs from these movies would have been played on Radio/loudspeakers all the time those days. That music must have been falling on my ears during my infancy 😊

Hullo Atuldom

“Pukaar” is a title that appears five times on the blog’s ‘LIST OF SONGS MOVIEWISE’. The title has been used in movies released in 1939, 1983 & 2000; there have been two unreleased films with this title who’s years have been given as 1970 & 1971. Meer Sahab, R. D. Burman & A. R. Rahman were the music director for the 1939, 1983 & 2000 released ‘Pukaar’ (don’t know if there is a plural possible for the word ‘Pukaar’). Naushad & Ejaz Ashok were the music directors of the unreleased ‘Pukaar’. All the films with the title ‘Pukaar’ that are on the blog are only one or two songs old. (Here I would like to mention that I am speaking of the films posted & I don’t know if there are any other films with the title ‘Pukaar’ yet to appear on the blog).

The ‘parallel cinema’ refers to films which have been made as the alternative to the mainstream commercial films. Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil are regarded as the ‘parallel cinema stars’ because they mostly worked in woman-centric parallel films and most of their such films like ‘Ankur’ (1974), ‘Nishant’ (1975), ‘Manthan’ (1976), ‘Bhumika’ (1977), ’Arth’ (1982) etc were box office success. Shabana Azmi, with the success of her very first parallel film, started acting in the mainstream commercial films with ‘Fakira’ (1976) in a lead role. Smita Patil on the other hand kept herself aloof from mainstream commercial films until 1981. What led her to sign mainstream commercial films from 1981 onwards?
